Self-assembled nanostructured materials for electronic and optoelectronic applicatons

Objective

The spontaneous formation of nanometer-sized droplets of semiconductor material on a lattice-mismatched substrate opens up the possibility of a new semiconductor material- technology in which the band structure can be engineered on the nanoscale in all three dimensions. We will conduct a major investigation into the science and technology of these self-assembled nanostructured materials, with a view to developing the ability to modify their prosperities by design. We will exploit their advantages by fabricating high-performance lasers with low threshold currents and high thermal-stability for telecommunications applications (980, 1300 and 1550 mn). We will ensure the effective transfer of state-of-the-art advances in this technology to European industry in the short term, and will investigate their medium and long term potential for exploitation in optical data storage and nanoelectronics.
