Tuneable filters based on dielectric resonators

Objective

New specifications for Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) place exceptionally stringent demands on filter performance for base stations operating at approximately 2GHz. There is an urgent requirement to develop new materials capable of satisfying the requirements and future EU needs. The proposal will develop new materials for dielectric resonator filters which possess extremely low dielectric loss. A key element of the proposal is the investigation of three tuning options (ferroelectric, ferrite and piezoelectric), which will impart frequency agility by electronic tuning. In this proposal we have the opportunity to develop the tunable dielectric resonator technology for applications of this type in nanoscience and other sensor science, wherever ultrasensitive bolometry is required.
