Development of low energy and eco-efficient grinding technologies (ENGY)

Objective

Grinding is a critical machining operation in precision manufacturing processes and has been investigated to improve quality of finished parts and performance of machines and tools, leading to inefficient systems that consume a high amount of energy and produce jots of wastes. The aim of the project is the improvement of the energy efficiency of grinding, addressing issues for the entire grinding system including machine, tool, process control and parameters. This will be referred to the traditional use of grinding in a typical production chain composed by soft machining, heat treatment and grinding as a finishing operation. The project also addresses issues on the shortening of process chains by the so- called grind-hardening. This process utilises the heat produced during grinding to harden the workpiece. An industrial use of such a process will alter the traditional manufacturing chain of high quality machined parts.
