Outcomes of the multicriteria model

Mathematical calculation of the aptitude of each alternative will be done by the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution. The multicriteria model will consist of a group of alternative crop associations/agricultural practices/strategies to be selected, and a group of criteria (perspectives), in which the performance of each alternative is measured. The approach is a Multicriteria Decision Method for the arrangement of preferences to an ideal solution by similarity. The basic principle is that the chosen alternative must have the shortest distance to the positive ideal solution. Within the model, and since several participants are consulted, a decision process is carried out separately for each participant, with the aim of studying the individual choice, to later proceed with the aggregation of the information. The outcome of the model will be the establishment of the order of preferences of all alternatives for each pedoclimatic region.

Farm level economic benefits, costs and improved sustainability of diversified cropping systems

Estimation of the economic impacts of sustainable soil, water, crop and farm management.

Description of the selected diversified cropping systems derived from the participatory workshop

UPCT will deliver the outcomes of task 2.4 to the Regional Coordinators, which will organise a participatory workshop with all partners and stakeholders in each country with case studies to present the results of the surveys and multicriteria decision making to open a plenary discussion. The final list of diversified cropping systems for each region will be the outcomes of this workshop. The Diverfarming project addresses the issue that the adoption of a single management practice could not be enough to face all the identified socioeconomic and environmental problems, taking into account economic costs, technical constraints and social acceptation, so the synergistic use of a few suitable agricultural practices and strategies combined within diversified cropping systems will be needed. After the selection of the diversified cropping systems with low-input agronomic practices, all partners will design the experimental setup for the WPs 3-6.

Prediction of soil erosion for different scenarios

Extrapolatation of soil erosion to catchment scale in the different case studies to relate crop diversification system to erosion rates by use of models

Selection of crop quality and nutritional indicators for each crop and region

Crop quality and nutritional properties selected will vary among pedoclimatic regions and crop types. For cereals, legumes and industrial crops, we will measure specific grain weight, flour yield, moisture content, ash content, oil content, protein content and starch content. For tree crops and vegetables we will determine fruit weight, fruit size distribution, flesh firmness, soluble solids, juice pH, titratable acidity and water content. There are many factors that can affect the nutritional quality of crops. In Diverfarming, some factors will be assessed, such as dietary fibre, mineral composition (i.e., Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, S, I) and trace elements (i.e. Se, Cl, Pb, Co, Cr, Cd). The nutrient selection will be based on the specific crop.

An important output of WP4 will be the dissemination between the partners of methods and protocols and the consolidation of standard (or standardisable) protocols to efficiently compare and correlate the results. For this purpose, a workshop will be organised at UT at the beginning of WP4 (in coordination with WP10), dedicated to the sampling strategy, samples handling and shipping, standardisation of analytical approaches, plant diversity monitoring, and overall planning of WP4 field activities. The results will be depected in the Handbook with description of all protocols to be used

To ensure and enhance gender equality within the Diverfarming consortium and in relation to OG and Communities of Practitioners we will make an inventory of gender equality among the partner teams and collaborators This will include the numbers of women and men involved how they are involved positions roles and work life balance issues The inventory will address ownership for stakeholders and their needs for improving sustainable agribusiness models and relevant sitespecific gender information We will assess in the Communities of Practitioners and OG the influence of female participants compared to male in selecting and prioritizing diversified cropping systems by design of proper questionnaires
