Cross-case study comparative policy analysisDeep analysis of the local rural development programs n order to find out which instruments are used to promote environmental and economic sustainability
Systematic overview (map) of main typologies of agri-food value chain in the EU as connected with crop diversificationIdentification of existing typologies of downstream value chain configurations in the different pedoclimatic regions where the case studies will be based. This task will focus to detect whether cropping systems and agricultural practices in different pedoclimatic regions, as introduced in the past, may have affected existing value chain configurations.
White Paper on sustainable diversified cropping systems to scientifically support relevant EU policiesPolicy recommendations to update EU policies as a result of analysis of Diverfarming results
Outcomes of the multicriteria modelMathematical calculation of the aptitude of each alternative will be done by the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution. The multicriteria model will consist of a group of alternative crop associations/agricultural practices/strategies to be selected, and a group of criteria (perspectives), in which the performance of each alternative is measured. The approach is a Multicriteria Decision Method for the arrangement of preferences to an ideal solution by similarity. The basic principle is that the chosen alternative must have the shortest distance to the positive ideal solution. Within the model, and since several participants are consulted, a decision process is carried out separately for each participant, with the aim of studying the individual choice, to later proceed with the aggregation of the information. The outcome of the model will be the establishment of the order of preferences of all alternatives for each pedoclimatic region.
Farm level economic benefits, costs and improved sustainability of diversified cropping systemsEstimation of the economic impacts of sustainable soil, water, crop and farm management.
Description of the selected diversified cropping systems derived from the participatory workshopUPCT will deliver the outcomes of task 2.4 to the Regional Coordinators, which will organise a participatory workshop with all partners and stakeholders in each country with case studies to present the results of the surveys and multicriteria decision making to open a plenary discussion. The final list of diversified cropping systems for each region will be the outcomes of this workshop. The Diverfarming project addresses the issue that the adoption of a single management practice could not be enough to face all the identified socioeconomic and environmental problems, taking into account economic costs, technical constraints and social acceptation, so the synergistic use of a few suitable agricultural practices and strategies combined within diversified cropping systems will be needed. After the selection of the diversified cropping systems with low-input agronomic practices, all partners will design the experimental setup for the WPs 3-6.
Recommendations to preserve the environment and the long-term agricultural viability and competitivenessWinwin farmersociety situations and the most feasible and promising measures leading to farm productivity revenues competitiveness environmental improvements and other benefits for society and the environment with a focus on robust and lowregret measures which should be included in future policies
Report on improvements in above and belowground biodiversity by adoption of diversified cropping systems, and relationships between biodiversity, functioning and soil qualityResults of implementation of WP4 in all case studies and relationship between biodiversity improvements and soil quality and management practices
Prediction of soil erosion for different scenariosExtrapolatation of soil erosion to catchment scale in the different case studies to relate crop diversification system to erosion rates by use of models
Selection of crop quality and nutritional indicators for each crop and regionCrop quality and nutritional properties selected will vary among pedoclimatic regions and crop types. For cereals, legumes and industrial crops, we will measure specific grain weight, flour yield, moisture content, ash content, oil content, protein content and starch content. For tree crops and vegetables we will determine fruit weight, fruit size distribution, flesh firmness, soluble solids, juice pH, titratable acidity and water content. There are many factors that can affect the nutritional quality of crops. In Diverfarming, some factors will be assessed, such as dietary fibre, mineral composition (i.e., Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, S, I) and trace elements (i.e. Se, Cl, Pb, Co, Cr, Cd). The nutrient selection will be based on the specific crop.
Guidelines showing the future pathways for agricultural machinery innovation in Europe adapted to crop diversification to increase global sustainabilityAssessment of the benefits and limitation in terms of consumption of fuel, GHG emissions, soil disturbance and time of labour of available machinery. Results of surveys of farmers, policy makers and researchers to gather the actual needs and demands in agricultural machinery innovation
Handbook on WP4 protocols for sampling, sample procedure and analysisAn important output of WP4 will be the dissemination between the partners of methods and protocols and the consolidation of standard (or standardisable) protocols to efficiently compare and correlate the results. For this purpose, a workshop will be organised at UT at the beginning of WP4 (in coordination with WP10), dedicated to the sampling strategy, samples handling and shipping, standardisation of analytical approaches, plant diversity monitoring, and overall planning of WP4 field activities. The results will be depected in the Handbook with description of all protocols to be used
Inventory about gender equalityTo ensure and enhance gender equality within the Diverfarming consortium and in relation to OG and Communities of Practitioners we will make an inventory of gender equality among the partner teams and collaborators This will include the numbers of women and men involved how they are involved positions roles and work life balance issues The inventory will address ownership for stakeholders and their needs for improving sustainable agribusiness models and relevant sitespecific gender information We will assess in the Communities of Practitioners and OG the influence of female participants compared to male in selecting and prioritizing diversified cropping systems by design of proper questionnaires

Research protocols on how to analyse the role of value chain conditions on adoption and diffusion mechanismsDevelopment of common protocols among partners on how to analyse the role of value chain conditions on adoption and diffusion mechanisms in all pedoclimatic regions to compare results
Proposal of a set of soil and crop indicators that determine sustainability of diversified cropping systems at field scale. We will focus on changes in potential productivity rather than calculate an absolute value. This will allow to estimate crop production risks associated with unsustainable management using only simple metrics for factors such as soil texture, SOC, nutrients or pH.
Development of routines to simulate C sequestration of diversified cropping systemsSimulation of C dynamics in the soil with field data from the Diverfarming case studies within the diverse pedoclimatic regions and agricultural practices included in the project
The SusDiver DSTDecision Support Tool (web-based and free app), which places the best research results in the hands of end-users, who are guided to tailor the most suitable diversified cropping system, low-input practices and most adapted machinery to improve land productivity, revenues and ecosystem services, with mechanisms to adapt their value chains to new agribusiness models and market demands
Validated prototype for sustainable tillageIndustras David, the machinery manufacturer, will provide innovation to improve soil tillage by reducing compaction while managing residues, validating a prototype in a 14th case study established in their experimentation fields. Mulch-till can be a sustainable and yield maximizing soil management method, that may eliminate the current problems of clean-till and no-till. The prototype will be equipped with sensors and cameras allowing the collection of data to be improved and optimised in the field.
