Target: specialist community, WWTP operators and planners, scientific community. The website will present in a structured ways technologies to improve energy efficiency in WWTPS and present results in case studies, large scale demonstrators and best practices (from Powerstep and examples from other initiatives).

Communication kit for all 6 demosites will be produced and released with consitent layout They will include key information of the demo sites as well as objectives and process descriptions Target delegations and general public

Four regional workshops with municipalities

Four regional workshops with representative of municipalities. Regions with high interest and potential will be selected, targeting innovative municipalities with ambitious environmental and climate goals (objective: include energy positive WWTP as their climate strategy).

The interactive website will target the general public It should introduce the topic of energy positive WWTP in a friendly and playful way User friendly easy accessibility informative and visually attractive

Options for nitrogen removal after advanced carbon extraction

POWERSTEP guidelines of process options to remove nitrogen with municipal wastewater after advanced carbon extraction. Nitrogen removal options will be compared, also with conventional processes for resources (energy, footprint, chemicals) and performances (removal, stability, flexibility, sludge production).

Decision support for finding the appropriate resource and energy optimized SDE treatment technology

Final recommendations / guidelines of POWERSTEP based on a decision tool and model results, using few simple key factors depending on the WWTP characteristics, comparison of tested options with conventional processes for resources (energy, footprint, chemicals, products) and performances (removal or recovery, process stability and flexibility).

Feasibility of main-stream nitrogen removal and biomass production with duckweed bioreactor

Full technical assessment of duckweed reactor prototype and Return on Experience. Optimisation of process (load, harvest, retention time). Focus on optimisation of artificial lightening and seasonal impact. Target: 80% TN removal. Evaluation of Biomethane Potential of duckweeds.

Design and performance of advanced primary treatment with microscreen

Guidelines for design and operation of advanced primary treatment with microscreen. Technical specifications including pretreatment, mesh size, hydraulic velocity, chemicals (substances, doses, contact times), operational requirements (backwash, cleaning), and operational performances (removal rates, backwash sludge quantity and quality.

Target-oriented communication plan

The communication plan will detail communication activities per audience target, communication rules as well as information flow between partners and communication team. The consortium will approve the communication plan.

Advanced control system for energy efficient biological nitrogen removal

Discussion on options and performances of advanced control systems for biological nitrogen removal after advanced primary treatment. The process control options will be described (SBR aeration cycle, feeding strategy, bypass of raw wastewater, dynamic chemical dosing, return of sludge supernatant, alternative carbon source). Process performance in demo site will be quantified including transition strategy from conventional scheme to process with advanced carbon extraction. Feasibility assessment of options.

Compendium of best practice of primary treatment processes for advanced carbon extraction

POWERSTEP guidelines for advanced primary treatment, with comparison of design parameters, performances and maintenances with conventional primary treatment processes. For each process, resource and performance will be defined (electricity requirement, footprint, chemicals, flexibility, removal rates for TS, COD, P).

Dissemination and exploitation plan

Dissemination and exploitation plan incl. reporting on innovation management.

Recommendations for improved energy management in WWTPs

Outcomes of scenario analysis with Smart Grid methods: evaluation of process options to manage energy (daily to seasonal load management, heat and electricity, storage, control rules), concrete recommendations of POWERSTEP for highest return on invest.

Full-scale technico-economical performances of options for heat electricity conversion in WWTP

Quantative performances of heat to power systems (temperature management, efficiency etc), and Return on Experience of full-scale demonstration (operation stability, integration in CHP / heat system, upscale options).

Experience and performance data for the implementation of nitritation on a two-stage WWTP

Analysis of optimal performance factors and key figures for nitritation as sludge age feeding rate oxygen demand or temperature dependent on local circumstances Experience report on qualitative and quantitative description of challenges problems and appropriate solutions for a stable nitritation process

Process description for maintaining stable nitrogen removal using nitritation+anammox with MBBRs in mainstream water

Process description for maintaining stable nitrogen removal using nitritation+anammox with MBBRs in mainstream water. Assessment of performance in large-scale prototype trials including process stability at low temperature and measures to tackle loss of anammox biomass.

Policy brief

The policy brief will analyse existing national and European regulations. Based upon economic study and cost / benefit analysis (D5.3), recommendations will be done for policy development towards facilitating the market uptake of options for energy recovery from wastewater. These recommendations will result from a consultation process between national and European authorities.

Market analysis and economical impact studies

Market potential analysis (wastewater infrastructure in Europe, investment needs) and “macroeconomic cost of no action study” (economic growth, job creation, CO2 reduction etc). Cost / benefit analysis of energy recovery options in urban sanitation schemes.

Technology dossiers to apply for ETV certification and guidelines

“Submission-ready dossier” per technology, to be produced with each technology provider, and general guidelines to prepare ETV dossier for WWTP processes.

Full-scale technico-economical assessment of Power-to-Gas concept applied to WWTP

Qualitative analysis and quantification of economic net benefit of gas storage concepts incl. optimal control strategies, reuse of pure oxygen in activated sludge treatment, metabolic by-water management options and heat recycling options. This will be based on the results of the full-scale trials.

Recommendations for ecoefficient new concepts of energy positive WWTP

POWERSTEP key conclusions of cost and environmental assessment of concepts based upon LCA and LCC assesment, and energy audits. Proposed process schemes will be assessed against their technical, environmental and cost performances and compared with the WWTP models. Discussion on appropriate boundary conditions for optimum performances of technologies and process schemes.

Market validation of new concepts of energy positive WWTP

“Return on Experience synthesis” of energy audit and concept studies in > 20 WWTP throughout Europe including recommendations to implement concepts of Powerstep. The WWTPs will be selected to be representative of the market segments (size, influent, treatment targets, process schemes etc).

Proposition of POWERSTEP process schemes and WWTP reference models

Description of WWTP reference models representative of plant size influent quality and treatment targets and short list of proposed schemes including a discussion on posttreatment options technical options for sludge treatment and digestion and inclusion of relevant combinations of technologies tested in Powerstep

Successful realization of the full-scale membrane ammonia stripping and its start-up

Documentation of the successful realization of the fullscale plant and its startup Process desciption design and operation process optimisation at startup first performance result

Best practices for improved sludge digestion

Review of exisiting innovative and successful practices to improve digestion and biogas yield with municipal sludge a benchmark Innovative practices will be discussed like highrate digestion twostage digestion thermophilic digestion thermal hydrolysis temperature phased digestion etc These process data will be used for the concept developments within the project WA5 process schemes energy audits etc

Operation and optimization of membrane ammonia stripping

Scientific report on the operation and optimization phase of the operation including long term process performance and operation experience (maintenance strategy) as well as a condensed primer for future adopters of this technology including operational recommendations (process start-up and shut-down).

Recommendations for WWTP operators, municipalities and WWTP technology providers willing to engage in renewable energy market

Analysis of national and European regulatory tools for smart grids, renewable energy market, subsidies, and consequences for WWTP operators, municipalities and technology providers as market players. Regulatory requirements and opportunities. Identification of promising market segments for concepts tested in Powerstep.
