Objectif
A prospective longitudinal study to examine the impact of rehabilitation on the pattern of recovery after stroke (4 centres across Europe). Variations in case mix will be corrected using multiple logistic regressions. Several aspects of recovery will be assessed on an agreed protocol at admission in the rehabilitation centres, at discharge, at 2, 6 and 12 months after stroke. Nature and amount of therapy offered will be documented, on matched patients. Entire treatment sessions will be videotaped. Amount, content and context of therapy will be documented with time sampling and related to recovery. Finally the analysis of management, staff characteristics and physical environment will allow to determine which services offer optimal therapy at what input of man-hours. This study will allow to identify ways of improving the rehabilitation services for stroke patients and as a result enable people to cope better with disability.
