In vivo magnetic resonance diagnostic surrogate markers in prion diseases

Deliverables

The clinical study identified new non- invasive MR biomarkers of the disease that demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity. In particular, thalamic 1H-MRS and DWI sequences should be included in the diagnostic criteria of prion diseases. This will certainly improve the current diagnostic protocols for human TSE.
The animal model characterisation showed that early region-specific MR changes can be detected before the symptomatic phase of the disease and that later MR changes are similar to that found in human TSE. This last result highlights the relevance of this animal model to the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for human TSE as well as for testing new therapies.
