Objectif
Representing a principal novel approach, peptide vaccines have been successfully developed in higher vertebrates. Here, exact knowledge on which part(s) of the virus can bind and stimulate the immune system is established and exploited in vaccine production. There is now sufficient immunological information to develop this technology in fish. This, our main objective, will be achieved by identifying and exploiting the functional restrictions of a host immune molecules, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule. The project will generate much needed reagents for a multitude of functional studies in fish, increase the general knowledge on fish immunology and bring Europe to the frontier of aquacultural research. It will also enable design of antigenic peptide vaccines matching the immune-specific constitution of the production population.
