NOVEL PROCESSING AND TESTING PROCEDURES OF OPTIMIZED CERAMIC AND METAL POLYMER COMPOSITES FOR ACOUSTO OPTICALELECTRICAL

Objetivo

In this pro ject materials for application in integrated optics and wave guides are to be developed and their properties investigated. The materials are intended for use in electro-optic, nonlinear-optic and acousto-optic switches and modulators, as well as in photosensors and photocopiers. From the achievements to date the coordination in this project becomes obvious. The composites proposed and developed by a partner at the University of Osnabruck are being compacted by a special pressing and welding technique with superimposed high frequency (ultrasonic) vibration, developed at the University of Vienna. Using piezoelectric substrates, e.g. the refractive index of the spin- coated (or ultrasonically pressed) light guide can be changed by a voltage-induced oscillation of the substrate. A PZT-composite Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 was produced and proved to have good piezoelectric properties. An equivalent PZT/PMMA-composite, which can merely be produced by ultrasonic pressing, is just in fabrication. The optical properties like refractive index (index profile), reflection coefficient and absorption coefficient of ultrasonically produced CA (cellulose acetate), PS (polystyrene) and PMMA/PS (polymethyl methylacrylate/polystyrene) blocks were investigated. By the group at the Max-Planck-Institute in Stuttgart, a method was proved to characterize the bonding strength substrate/layer by bending tests. The partner at the ENSEEG in Grenoble developed and proved a method to characterize defects and microcraks in ceramics and composite materials by impedance spectroscopy.
Materials for use in integrated optics and wave guides have been developed and their properties investigated. The materials are intended for use in electrooptic, nonlinear optical and acoustooptic switches and modulators, as well as in photosensors and photocopiers.
THE EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM A SPECIAL VIBRATORY PRESSING TECHNIQUE WILL BE USED FOR THE PROCESSING OF NOVEL COMPOSITE MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AS WELL FOR ELECTRO-AND MAGNETO-OPTICAL SWITCHERS, ACOUSTO-OPTICAL MODULATORS AND SENSORS.

THE MECHANICAL STABILITY OF THE COMPOSITES IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR THE SUCCESSFUL PROCESSING. THUS, PARALLEL TO THE OPTICAL AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES, THE MECHANICAL ONES ARE TO BE INVESTIGATED AS WELL.

THE PROPOSED PROCESSING METHOD OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS BUT IS STILL AT THE DEVELOPING STAGE.
