Tailored strategies for the conservation and restoration of archaeological value Cu-based artefacts from Mediterranean countries

Objectif

A significant degree of understanding of degradation causes of archaeological Cu-based artefacts has been recently developed in Europe. In addition to the traditional methodologies, this understanding allows to propose new methods for restoration and conservation. The aim of this project is to systematically identify the degradation causes of well-defined groups of Cu-based archaeological value artefacts selected as a function of the archaeological context. Starting from this knowledge, innovative or traditional methods, anchored in local actions, will be used for the restoration and conservation of the archaeological artefacts after validation tests carried out on Cu-based reference alloys with a micro chemical structure similar to that of ancient alloys. The project therefore intends to develop and validate tailored approaches for stopping degradation and for preventing further damage in Museum show boxes and deposits.
