Advanced materials and manufacturing technologies for photocatalytically active surfaces

Deliverables

The result contributors (led by USCL) have developed a set of agreed protocols for the assessment of the photocatalytic activities of semiconductor-based photocatalytic materials (invariably titania based) when the latter are in the form of: clear and opaque films and powders. USCL have also utilised existing ink technology, to create a range of inks suitable for the rapid assessment of the activities of photocatalytic materials. The defined set of standard photocatalyst assessment methods and the novel range of intelligence inks for photocatalyst detection and activity measurement will prove invaluable to the photocatalyst community, including manufacturer, customer and legislator. Additionally (led by EADS) the consortium has developed a new measurement system to investigate different transparent and opaque photocatalytic materials. To achieve this a novel system has been developed based on a portable FTIR with integrated pumping system. Into the closed gas-flow loop, an UV chamber with integrated quartz tube is installed, containing the samples. The starting conditions can be varied, e.g. gas composition, velocity, humidity, temperature. A broad range of reaction products can be detected versus time. It is also possible to coat the samples with stearic acid and to examine its degradation. The advantage of this method is the low time consuming and easy handling. With slight modifications, to avoid clogging of the tubes, even powders can be tested. Changing the lamps, investigations under different lighting conditions and wavelengths can be undertaken.
