Nanostructured coatings via environmentally friendly deposition techniques for demanding tribological applications

Objectif

Vacuum coatings are widely applied in tribological systems, allowing wear reduction and in some cases the use of lighter materials. In the car industry, piston rings are already being PVD coated by Japanese suppliers. European suppliers will have to develop new technical solutions also to comply with new emission laws. Nanostructured coatings (with structures, defined at nanometric scale ) are attracting strong attention for their ability to combine properties difficult to reconcile like high hardness and high toughness. These coatings, made possible by new deposition techniques, are expected to give significant improvements over current ones, e.g. using nanolayered or nanocolumnar structures or inclusions of nanoparticles in metal-ceramic matrices. The project aims to develop new nanostructured coatings for demanding, widespread mechanical applications (gears) and for car engines components ( cylinders, tappets ), and new deposition systems fitted to pilot scale treatment of real parts using the novel techniques of pulsed cluster beam, laser-arc and cluster CVD.
