Objectif
Tidal areas, such as lagoons and estuaries, are complex and delicate environments subject to rapid morphological and ecological change, often in response to strong human interference. The problems connected to tidal areas have been recognised by the International Ramsar Convention on Wetlands: 445 of the 844 protected wetlands of international importance listed by the Convention are located in Europe. The TIDE project aims at developing comprehensive models of tidal environments incorporating both physical and ecological processes. Useful models of tidal systems cannot separately describe their biology and physics without failing to predict the overall system behaviour. Progress in tidal research requires a new generation of models with far reaching economic and environmental benefits. This is the goal of the TIDE project. The socio-economic consequences of system change are considered as an integral part of the programme.
