Obiettivo
The aims of the project are :
Isolation of marine microalgae from the coasts of Spain and Portugal
Adaptation to mass culture of the isolated marine microalgae
Production of clam larvae from the parent stock
Computer controlled culture of clam larvae for spat production
Biochemical analysis of the marine microalgae and spat clams
Computer controlled culture for the production of microalgae
Clam spat fattening in ponds with marine microalgae and artificial diets
Growth, survival, condition indexes, oxygen consumption, filtration rates and N-excretion rates
Biochemical analysis of microalgae, artificial diets and the parent clams
Optimization of clam culture for maximal production and minimal cost
The coordinator will carry out the isolation, determination of mass culture conditions and biochemical analyses of the isolated marine microalgae from different marine environments.
The biochemical analysis performed will be necessary to establish the nutritional value of the isolated microalgae and will be: protein, carbohydrates, lipids, pigments, amino acids, fatty acids and metals. Marine microalgae isolated from the coasts of Spain and Portugal, as the ones already utilised from collection, will be used to produce larvae and after clam spat at the University of Santiago. The species of clam used will be Tapes decussatus. Microalgae and larvae cultures will be optimised through computer data acquisition and control of conditions taking into account previously programmed restriction. .>SP 1 Once the spat larvae will have metamorphosed, they will be transported from the University of Santiago to the University of Porto where it will be performed its fattening at an intensive or semi-industrial level.
Contractor no. 2 will perform fattening of small clam from spat to commercial size. The clams will be cultivated in pools with controlled environmental conditions. They will be fed controlled mass cultures of the isolated marine microalgae supplemented in some cases with artificial diets. It will be also tested the use of different algal culture systems as, for instance, plastic bags. A continuous monitoring of the culture growth will be done by the analysis of the biochemical composition of the clams under the different experimental designs and stages of development.
At the end of this project economical interests and possibilities should be shown. The production of clam from spat to commercial size using as food sources the isolated marine microalgae, microalgae from collection and mixtures with artificial diets will be achieved. It will also be possible to evaluate the economical constraints of fattening small clams under these conditions for possible future industrial utilization.
