Large demonstratIoN of user CentrIc urban and long-range charging solutions to boosT an engaging deployment of Electric Vehicles in Europe

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - INCIT-EV (Large demonstratIoN of user CentrIc urban and long-range charging solutions to boosT an engaging deployment of Electric Vehicles in Europe)

Période du rapport: 2021-07-01 au 2022-12-31

INCIT-EV - Large demonstratIoN of user CentrIc urban and long-range charging solutions to boosT an engaging deployment of Electric Vehicles in Europe

Electric Vehicles have been recognized as a main factor to decarbonize road transport in Europe, which contributed 21% of the EU's total emissions of CO2.
However, the mainstream adoption of Electric Vehicles is still hindered by the lack of infrastructure availability, interoperability, and payment solutions as well as other user apprehension slowing their adoption.

INCIT-EV aims to demonstrate an innovative set of charging infrastructures, technologies and its associated business models, ready to improve the EV users experience beyond early adopters, thus, fostering the EV market share in the EU.
The project will seek the emergence of EV users’ unconscious preferences relying on latest neuroscience techniques to adapt the technological developments to the users’ subjective expectations. 5 demo environments at urban, peri-urban and extra-urban conditions will be ready for the deployment of 7 use cases, addressing:

Smart and bi-directional charging optimized at different aggregation levels, now testing at Amsterdam Region
Dynamic wireless charging lane in an urban area in Paris
Dynamic wireless charging for long distance (e-road prototype for TEN-T corridors) in Versailles
Charging Hub in a park&ride facility in Turin
Superfast charging systems for EU corridors in Tallin
Low power DC bidirectional charging infrastructure for EVs, including two-wheelers, being tested in Zaragoza
Opportunity wireless charging for taxi queue lanes in airports & central stations, installed in Zaragoza

These use cases pursue innovations in the current charging solutions as well as their seamless integration into the existing transport, grid, ICT and civil infrastructures.
The main objectives of the INCIT-EV project could be summarize as follows :
Goal 1: To deepen the knowledge about users’ expectations and concerns regarding EV adoption and charging infrastructure use.
Goal 2: To design a set of innovative and interoperable charging solutions in urban, peri-urban and extra urban areas following the users’ expectations and looking for their seamless integration in the existing infrastructures (transport, energy grids, ICT and civil ones).
Goal 3: To develop a Platform integrating a Decision Support System for mobility planners and a set of Applications to improve the EV user charging and driving experience.
Goal 4: To carry out a full demonstration campaign reaching TRL 8 at five demonstration environments involving seven use cases and validate the INCIT-EV Platform at two follower locations.
Goal 5: To promote the investment in charging infrastructure through attractive business models together with recommendations to solve regulatory and standardisation bottlenecks.
Goal 6: To engage mobility planners in new charging infrastructures adapted to the users’ expectations, while promoting these solutions among the users, through communication and dissemination campaigns.
During the first 3 years of the project, a lot has been done to prepare the tools and technologies to be later demonstrated, and knowledge of users and stakeholders have been captured to prepare for later interactions and solution modeling.

Thus, work has started on the technologies and vehicles to prepare the various demonstrations that have started in 2022 and will continue through the commissioning phase in Paris, Versailles (France), Amsterdam, Utrecht (The Netherlands), Turin (Italy), Tallinn (Estonia) and Zaragoza (Spain).

The technical solutions have been specified and developments have started for charging solutions. The necessary environment has also been prepared. For example, the reference ICT architecture and the common information models have been defined. This will allow for example to develop interoperable payment system later in the project.

Another example is the development of software components to create EV services. These services will help to enhance the EV charging experience of the users. Such services are Smart Charging Operation, Quick Scan tool (QR-codes) for easy payment and a few more.

Regarding cities and mobility planners, work has also been underwa to develop the support tools such as the Decision Support System. A methodology has been defined to allow assessment of city readiness concerning EV mobility.

Finally, at the user level, a deep study of user patterns and habits have been conducted paving the way to further interaction in the 3rd period with the evaluation of Users impact of the new technologies deployed. Stakeholders have been characterized as well to be later engaged and challenged in the business modeling phase.

In order to share this progress and further engage mobility planners, an active communication campaign has been pursued through press releases, participation in events, webinars, meeting and workshop. All these are also clearly listed on the website devoted to the project that is a central tool to log the progress of the project.
Most of the innovations are expected to be achieved in the second and third reporting period, including :
• the INCIT-EV holistic platform for modelling multi-infrastructure network systems,
• new strategies to incentivize different categories of EV users,
• V2G DC superfast chargers able to improve the resiliency of the power grid in charging location
• EV charging hubs on smart microgrids, including integration with tramway DC grids
• Bidirectional V2X charging infrastructure to enable the EVs as manageable demand and storage assets of the power grid.
• Dynamic wireless power transfer charging for urban environments and electric roads,
• Static wireless power transfer for opportunity charging,
• Secure low power DC racks for LEVs,
• User-centric smart charging for optimizing the grid use at regional level while minimizing charging time, ready to participate in congestion schemes.
And by promoting electromobility, this project will also contribute to wider impacts such as improved urban air quality, reduced noise pollution, improved grid integration and eventually climate change mitigation.
