AGRICAM – reducing the usage of antibiotics and increasing animal welfare through advanced thermal imaging system for detecting early cases of mastitis in dairy cows

Project description

A visionary solution to prevent mastitis in dairy cows

Dairy cows are threatened by a potentially lethal infection from bacteria introduced during milking procedures or through the environment. Mastitis infects a third of dairy cows and represents a major concern for farmers. Existing methods to treat the infection are based on antibiotics. However, this is ineffective because it does not prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The EU-funded AGRICAM project proposes new technology based on sensors and data analysis software. The solution comprises a thermal imaging camera that performs over 10 000 analyses per day. In addition, it continually observes and prevents mastitis, providing up to four times earlier detection than existing methods offer without the use of antibiotics.

Objective

Mastitis, a potentially fatal mammary gland infection, is the most common disease in dairy cows, usually resulting from bacteria introduced either during the milking process or from environmental contact. It affects at least one in three dairy cows throughout Europe and has a big economic impact on farms, causing very large losses in milk production and degradation in milk quality. Current treatments use conventional antibiotics however, this method is ineffective and leads to developing bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
Agricam AB, a Swedish Ag-Tech company, has developed a revolutionary technology - a sensor-solution comprising of a thermal imaging camera and smart data analysis software, detecting the symptoms of mastitis in a very early stage. Our patented heat camera systems (TRL-8) perform over 10 000 analyses daily for large scale and heavy-duty dairy farms in Sweden, monitoring and preventing mastitis amongst the herd 24-7. With a drastically earlier detection time, 2-4 times faster than any current methods, no antibiotics are needed for tackling the disease.
We strive to lead an agricultural revolution that will help farmers to manage their herds in a unique way- through early detection of harmful diseases thereby increasing on-farm efficiency and production, animal welfare, reducing the usage of antibiotic drugs and on-farm costs. Agricam is now ready to take the product on an international arena starting in Europe where funds are required, in order to save millions of dairy cows from mastitis and reduce usage of antibiotics. This project will thus develop a business plan for the international expansion of Agricam’s technology to bring it to the European markets.
