Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SCIENTIA-FELLOWS II (SCIENTIA-FELLOWS II: International Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme)
Période du rapport: 2019-05-01 au 2021-04-30
Scientia Fellows II provides scientific training through research projects, chosen and shaped by the fellows in innovative, multidisciplinary and internationally recognised research teams. At the same time, the programme offers training across a broad range of transferable skills to equip the Fellows with competences necessary for positions in a variety of organisations both in the private and public sector, in and out of academia.
For the past two years, UiO has taken the programme into a broader European context to meet challenges presented in Horizon 2020 focusing on excellent research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
The Scientia Fellows II programme introduces new aspects such as: strong innovation components, new industry and academic partners, inter-sectoral opportunities and new training features in both research and transferable skills. The overall objectives of the programme are to provide:
• excellent research environments and infrastructure
• interaction between academia, healthcare and industry and small medium enterprises
• a training programme designed to maximize the career prospects of the researchers by the development of translational and multidisciplinary research skills along with transferable skills including, among others, entrepreneurship, dissemination and management.
Consequently, the Scientia Fellows II programme is an important contribution to strengthen mobility of researchers not only across boarders but also across sectors and research fields. The programme provides innovative and comprehensive training in different transferable skills to equip them with competences relevant for work in private and public sectors as well as for the mobility between sectors. The strong innovation component also gives the researchers the knowledge and tools enabling them to take their research ideas and projects further, to innovate and to consider entrepreneurial activities, which can further benefit patients, health care systems and society.
Therefore, Scientia Fellows II is a strong component in the European efforts to optimise the development and dynamic use of the continent`s intellectual capital, which again is essential to value and job creation and reaching the UN development goals.
Eighty one candidates were offered fellowship contracts and over forty Fellows have started their full-time fellowships by the end of this reporting period.
By the end of the Scientia Fellows II programme we anticipate, based upon our results in Scientia Fellows I, that;
- all the Fellows employed via the programme will have an opportunity to benefit from the attractive training offer, such as Postdoctoral programme and School of Health Innovation
- the number of publications will reach around 400
- around 50% - 60% of the Fellows have worked in intersectoral context in university, hospital, industry, SMEs or clusters and incubators, where 35-40% of the Fellows can have innovative projects for possible value creation
- around 10 -15% of Fellows may have totally integrated projects with industry, with possible 8 patents and 2-3 startups.
