Requirements definition of the hardware to be deployed

Market screening to find the hardware components that best match the project defined criteria. A best fit and best price/quality fit is selected for the building, neighborhood, and district communication in the demonstration sites.

Energy Storage Deployment Handbook

The handbook on business models for the deployment of energy storage will include chapters on business model archetypes, and chapters on market, policy, and regulatory frameworks. The handbook will be further enriched with the results from the demos in this project, and with case studies and testimonials from experts that will be interviewed over the period of the project.

Report on Large Scale Storage Implementation Simulation Results

Evaluation of the impact of large scale implementation of distributed energy storage, using the market-driven, regulated or mixed approach, on: o Maximization of RES integration: impact on RES curtailment on local scale/ on system-wide scale o Grid Challenges and the costs of storage mitigation measures o Required grid investments: some of the investments can be deferred if the peak load is reduced by storage, but some approaches might demand for investments. o Distribution network operation o Power system security. o Environmental and social impacts of large scale storage integration

Overview of the typical requirements that measurement and data logging equipment poses on the ICT infrastructure.

Demonstration Protocol Book

Book on measurement protocols meant to feed the discussions by providing clear and practice oriented information. Illustrations are added from the demonstrations were relevant and avoiding conflicts of interest. Other LCE6-10 projects are invited to add information.

Monitoring and evaluation of the 8 demonstration sites.

Overview of the current and emerging standards for smart grids.

Report on interoperability guidelines

Guidelines addressing in-depth interoperability, substantially improving on the state-of-the-art. These guidelines contain solutions on how to design and build interoperable components and subsystems that can be integrated with little effort and time. The guidelines allow the integration of components and subsystems into an overall system while insuring good performances.

Updated report on interoperability guidelines (D3.6)

The Interoperability guidelines reported in D3.6 will be updated by adding the learnings from the demonstrations in the original version.

Study on the integration of energy storage capabilities in a developing industrial area with an organic Rankine cycle unit.

Demonstrated embedment in 3 different controllable devices able to support flexibility of the energy demand

Different approaches for adding multiple services on a single ICT structure are compared using the inputs form the analyses on interoperability and gateway requirements. One selected approach is used to demonstrate the feasibility in 3 pieces of controllable devices able to support flexibility of the energy demand.

Study on the integration of a medium scale storage unit in a low voltage substation connecting a residential area and photovoltaic production.

Streamlined control algorithm for storage integration

Streamlined control algorithm, which could be used as an interface between the controllable resources and the network and market needs. It should be open and easily integrate different technologies and requirements. It should also be able to interact with resources of different levels of ‘smartness’.

Interoperability platform

Software platform to support and implement the interoperability as elaborated in the guidelines. It ensures that the project always has one option to apply the guidelines in practice (in the demonstrations).

Report on Large Scale Impact Simulations

With the cases and scenarios defined, the simulations can be prepared, simulated and the results evaluated. The focus is on understanding the following issues (both economic and technical) for each of the market-driven, regulated and mixed methods of implementing storage: • Impact of large scale implementation of distributed energy storage on the grid operation challenges, required grid investments and maximization of RES integration. • Possible mitigation measures for the detrimental impacts (e.g. investment needs and potential investors).

Neighbourhood simulation models for input in extrapolation (WP7)

Models for the different neighbourhood levels including the electrical loads and the direct and indirect storage capabilities for electricity as well as the dynamics of the heat storage installations and other local processes.

Report on Environmental and Social Analysis of a Large Scale Storage Implementation

Environmental and social analysis for the selected large scale storage integration scenarios.
