The main objective of SEEDS it to develop an add-on service to the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) on pollutant emissions and depositions that will enhance the use of satellite observations and provide new products to boost European competitiveness in air quality (AQ) management, precision agriculture and industrial sector applications.
SEEDS will integrate data from CAMS with Copernicus Sentinel satellite observations via data assimilation, inverse modelling, land surface modelling, and machine learning approaches to deliver cutting edge up-to-date estimates surface pollutant (NOx, NH3, ozone, biogenic VOCs) fluxes, both emission and deposition. SEEDS will show that enhanced satellite data use in emissions and depositions will not only improve the quality of the existing CAMS products but will also enable new products and uses across new market areas. The SEEDS production will target operationalization beyond SEEDS.
Emissions will be improved by the use of satellite information via inverse modelling. Depositions will be improved by data assimilation of satellite information on the land surface in the production chain. The capabilities of the new emission products to inform industrial activities will be shown, and activities to support emission information uptake by European industrial stakeholders will be initiated. SEEDS targets depositions of nitrogen and ozone components in anticipation of the demand of these products from the agricultural sector that will benefit from improved deposition and air concentration products for their impact assessment.
SEEDS data products will be available on a dedicated IT platform and promoted through co-creation workshops and scientific and user networks. This platform will facilitate the exploitation of the SEEDS data products and enhance the creation of downstream activities including innovation pathways linked to industrial, agricultural and AQ stakeholders. The AQ engagement will incorporate citizen science.
