Following a logic-based approach, the SOCS project developed a modular model for intelligent agents in dynamic environments.

The SOCS project focused on appropriate computational models for the description, analysis and verification of individual and aggregates of computational entities. These entities, named computees interact in global, open and dynamic environments and can form complex organisations, the societies. The declarative model developed for computees includes a knowledge base (K) to reason with, goals (G) to be achieved, and plans (P) to achieve the goals. The so-called KGP offers a suitable framework for computees to perform a synthesis of their reasoning and pursue their goals which can be adapted according to changes. Provision has been made for managing heterogeneous behaviour of computees. The use of the modular, flexible and declarative specification control model KGP allows modelling of both the reasoning capabilities and the reasoning of behaviour. The KGP model contributes to the development of user-friendly, intelligent and transparent systems for managing daily activities and electronic information. The project work may fulfill useful applications in complex environments including new forms of communication and commerce. Moreover, the new techniques support a ubiquitous accessibility of electronically available information and its exploitation through intelligent, distributed and collaborative means.
