Characterisation of genetic variation in the pig breeds of china and europe to facilitate the maintenance and exploitation of biodiversity

Leistungen

Genotypes arising from the project are available from the EC Pig Diversity Database at http://www.databases.roslin.ac.uk/pigbiodiv. The database contains individual microsatellite genotypes and AFLP typings for pigs from 60 European breeds including lines derived from Large White, Landrace, Duroc, Pietrain and Hampshire. Pooled allele frequencies for 39 microsatellite markers in 96 European and Chinese breeds will also be available through the database, together with allele frequencies at 1315 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (10 Chinese and 10 European breeds plus European wild boar), 30 of these SNPs were also typed across 25 European and 25 Chinese breeds, mtDNA polymorphisms (47 European and 19 Chinese breeds) and Y chromosome haplotypes (25 European and 25 Chinese breeds).
A unique DNA bank of 120 European and Chinese pig breeds has been collected. The 60 European breeds include commercial lines derived from the Large White, Landrace, Duroc, Pietrain and Hampshire as well as a large number of local or traditional breeds. Chinese breeds represent the full geographic and phenotypic range of diversity present in China. The number of animals sampled per breed is between 30-50 and includes both males and females. The Chinese DNA is banked in at the China Agricultural University, Jiangxi Agricultural University and Huazhong Agricultural University in China and European DNA is banked at the Roslin Institute (Edinburgh, UK) and INRA (Toulouse, France). The DNA is potentially available for further use and collaboration outside the project. Requests should be submitted to the contact person listed.
The PigBioDiv2 project generated data for various different molecular markers which can be used for pig breed differentiation and protection of breed integrity. 39 microsatellite marker allele frequencies in 96 European and Chinese breeds. 1285 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 10 European and 10 Chinese breeds plus European wild boar. 30 SNP genotypes in 25 European and 25 Chinese breeds. mtDNA sequence and polymorphisms in 47 European breeds and 19 Chinese breeds. 30 SNPs on the Y chromosome, 3 of which are diagnostic for Asian and European Y haplotypes. The marker allele frequencies provide the basis on which tests of breed differentiation and identity can be developed. These tests provide a means of protecting breed integrity and tracing breed-specific products.
