Ziel
Glass Ionomer Cements (GICs) are materials formed by reacting poly (acrylic acid) with an acid degradable glass. These cements are used in dentistry as filling materials, but they have inherent problems including poor early hydrolytic stability, no command set and poor fracture toughness . This project will develop a GIC that is capable of being command set on exposure to ultrasound. This material will have improved hydrolytic stability and mechanical properties and can be polished immediately after placement . The research will develop novel glasses to be incorporated into the cements which will be optimized to react with ultrasound. This will involve a study of the relationship between cement structure, ultrasound frequency and mechanical properties . A novel delivery system will also be designed and developed, based upon mechanical trituration.
