Objective
This project focuses on validating and introducing innovative Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) prediction methods for the performance of the ship/propeller combination at full scale, instead of the usual model scale. Existing CFD codes will be extended, extensive full scale and model-scale flow measurements will be conducted, and validation of the CFD predictions will be carried out. Successful CFD prediction of the full-scale viscous flow and propeller inflow will be a large step forward compared to the current practice of model-scale testing or computations, followed by empirical scaling methods. Reduced resistance, improved propeller inflow and propulsive efficiency, and reduced cavitations and vibrations can be achieved. The results will be implemented in design by the participating European shipyards, suppliers, service providers and research institutes, leading to higher design quality and efficiency and increased competitiveness.
