Optimisation and control of the freeze-drying of pharmaceutical proteins

Objective

The aim is to optimise the freeze-drying process of pharmaceutical proteins on a scientific basis, using a new technology to control ice nucleation; an innovative piece of equipment will be realised, developing new control and diagnostic tool and new sensors. This will improve the performances and the reproducibility of the process, allowing to control the final quality of the product, increasing competitively of European pharmaceutical industry and producers of freeze-dryers. The production of therapeutic proteins in lyophilised form will be greatly improved, reducing the possibility of antigenic effects. It will be possible to design prolonged-release injectable forms of proteins using an advanced supercritical coating technology, with lower treatment cost and improvement in the patient's comfort. Another objective is the reduction of waste product in the production of serological screening tests.
