Ziel
The main objectives of the project are:
- To analyse the mineral concentration of the flotation froth from the colour of the froths having e.g. different froth structures
- To design an on-line froth analyser by developing software for the colour and structure analysis of the froth and for classification using statistical and neural network methods
- To develop process models and control methods utilising the on-line froth analyser
- To install and test the resulting products at industrial flotation plants
As a result we shall have a hardware/software installation and methods for controlling the flotation using machine vision image of the froth.
The objectives will be achieved by dividing the needed research and development work into main six work packages: The colour and structure analysis and the classification of the froths will be carried out simultaneously in the Work packages 1, 2 and 3 which interact strongly and give feedback to each other. The on-line froth analyser will be developed in the Work package 4 by combining together the analysis and software results of the previous Work packages. The process modelling and controller design will be carried out simultaneously in the Work packages 5 and 6. The research and development will be based on standard, fore-front hardware and software for carrying out the project work in a cost-efficient and productive way.
Each resulting item is separately useful in the flotation industry. For example, the on-line froth analyser and/or classifier installed in the plant will highly increase the operators_ ability to control the flotation process. Then the analyser in the closed loop with the new controller will give the best advantage for the process control. In general the flotation process will become faster and more accurate since the flotation froth is in an optimal state most of the time. The more accurate use of chemicals will also reduce the environmental load. The results of this research will give a clear competitive advantage to the European mining industry and vendors of automation systems.
Scientific forums e.g. symposia, conferences, journals, etc. will be used to disseminate technical and scientific results of the project. The consortium has two industry partners and in addition existing, in the pre-research projects established contacts to several other companies. These companies will be the first routes for the take-up of the results.
Flotation is the most common industrial method by which valuable minerals are separated from waste rock, after crushing and grinding the ore. For process control, flotation plants and devices are equipped with conventional and specialised sensors. The measurement and evaluation of certain variables are, however, left to the visual observation of the human operator. Such variables include the size and form of the bubbles and the colour of the froth. These depend both on the type and the grain size distribution of the mineral particles, on the properties of the liquid phase, and on the operational parameters of the equipment. The process operators rely on these dependencies, but their chances are limited by the absence of quantitative characterizations and measures of the froth.
