Interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with metal and semiconductor clusters - ultrafast dynamics and high intensity effects

Objectif

Research objectives and content
The application of ultra fast and intense lasers to study the dynamics of clusters is a very new and prospering field in physics and chemistry. It is closely related to atomic physics. solid state physics and laser physics as well.
Our study will focus on the irradiation of mercury and silicon clusters with femtosecond laser pulses to study the process of multiphoton ionisation with subsequent fragmentation by Coulomb explosion. We want to establish the mechanism of multiphoton dissociative ionization for these clusters and track the different behaviour as one goes from metal to semiconductor clusters.
Training content (objective benefit and expected impact)
The training at this laboratory is of crucial importance for the applicant since femtosecond spectroscopy has not yet been introduced in Spain but it figures in the future plans of the Home Institution. We also expect that the results of our project will help to clarify the mechanism of dissociative ionization of clusters.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The group successfully employs ultrafast laser spectroscopy but simultaneously works on the development of the techniques of ultrafast lasers. Several companies in the laser industry arc interested in cooperating with Prof.Gcrber s group (applying the techniques developed to their products) and also using the modifications and improvements made to the commercial and home-built laser systems.
