Fracture mechanics based embrittlement modelling

Risultati finali

Embrittlement models (chemistry factors) have bee derived from the FRAME data. The models seem to describe the FRAME data better than other generally known and applied trend curves based on surveillance Charpy-V data. Chemistry variation (copper and phosphorus contents) of FRAME materials varies widely, which in principle would make it more difficult to bound the current data than data of limited parameter variation. FRAME is a single parameter experiment (measured chemistry of the materials, specimen irradiation in single capsule in one campaign and good irradiation temperature control), where variation of external parameters has been minimised. FRAME database is small and fully insufficient to definite a regulatory guide. FRAME embrittlement models, however, suggest that better embrittlement models can be derived.
In the FRAME project fracture toughness database (KJC) of 30 different materials irradiated in the HFR in Petten and in Budapest Research Reactor was created. The database includes altogether 736 single specimen data points. Fracture toughness characterisation of the materials was performed for the unirradiated and irradiated conditions with twelve specimens in most cases. In addition tensile properties of all materials were measured in the irradiated condition. Tensile properties of the materials in the unirradiated condition were either measured or delivered by the material suppliers. Chemical analysis of all raw material blocks was measured before specimen manufacture and irradiation. Majority of the materials were irradiated in a single capsule during one irradiation cycle in HFR in Petten and hence the irradiation can be considered as a single parameter irradiation. In the FRAME Final Technical Report the database has been used for: 1) QA-analysis of the data based on normalised load versus deflection and J versus deflection behaviour, 2) Deriving impurity based ambrittlement models and 3) Comparison of FRAME data with some Charpy-V based trend curves. The data can be used for fracture mechanics and embrittlement mechanics studies.
