Objective
The emissions from the phosphate industries were characterised under a previous contract, Bi7-006. In extension of results reported there, it is suggested, that the procedure of decanting and stockpiling the phosphogypsum on land before discharging the waste waters - a procedure being used at most of the active industrial sites studied under this project - seems to have been effective to reduce the enhancement of natural radioactivity levels in the recipient estuarine environments. This is in contrast to the procedure used at the Spanish phosphate industry in Huelva discharging phosphogypsum suspension directly to the Odiel river leading to clear enhancements of environmental radioactivity levels in the river as well as in an intertidal marsh environment. A similar procedure has been used at a now closed plant in NW England - not included in the present project - where a clear enhancement of natural levels in various parts of the marine environment has been reported in the literature.

IN CONTRAST TO THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE RADIONUCLIDES EMITTED BY THE NON NUCLEAR INDUSTRY. DURING 1990-1992 A STUDY HAS BEEN EXECUTED ON THIS IN THE CEC CONTRACT Bi7-006 "BEHAVIOUR OF POLONIUM-210 AND LEAD-210 IN EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTS. APPLICATION OF BIOINDICATORS." BASED ON ITS RESULTS THE PRESENT PROPOSAL (EXPANDED WITH A PARTICIPANT FORM SPAIN AND FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM) FOCUSSES ON THE RADIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF EFFLUENTS EMITTED BY PHOSPHATE INDUSTRIES IT COMPRISES IN BRIEF: - ADDITIONAL FIELD STUDIES OF ABIOTIC AND BIOTIC DISTRIBUTION OF RADIONUCLIDES EMITTED BY PHOSPHATE INDUSTRIES INTO ESTUARIES TO EXPAND AND VERIFY THE FIRST FINDINGS. (NL, FR, ES, PT, GB).
- A STUDY OF THE LAGTIME EFFECTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT AFTER CLOSING-DOWN OF A WET PROCESS PHOSPHATE PLANT (GB), WHICH WILL BE OF GENERAL INTEREST TO OTHER SITES AND SITUATIONS IN THE CEC.
- STUDY OF LANDFILLS WITH HARBOURSLUDGE CONTAMINATED BY THE PHOSPHATE INDUSTRY (NL). IT WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE RADIOLOGICAL PATWAYS AND RISKS LINKED TO THE DUMPING OF CONTAMINATED SLUDGE.
- FIELD AND/OR LABORATORTY STUDIES OF UPTAKE OF PO AND RA-226 BY MUSSELS (BIOINDICATORS) FROM EFFLUENTS AND/OR NATURAL BACKGROUND IN DIFFERENT WATERS, GEOLOGY, SEASONS (NL, FR, ES, PT, GB). IT WILL GIVE INSIGHT INTO THE RADIATION DOSE TO CONSUMERS OF MUSSELS AND THE ENHANCEMENT BY DIFFERENT PHOSPHOR INDUSTRIES.
- DYNAMIC MODELLING OF THE ABIOTIC DISTRIBUTION OF RADIONUCLIDES IN THE WESTERSCHELDT ESTUARY INTO WHICH EFFLUENTS FROM WET AND THERMO PROCESS PHOSPHOR INDUSTRIES ARE EMITTED (NL). MODEL INTERCOMPARISION AND CHECKING OUT MODELS ON DIFFERENT ESTUARIES (NL, PT). IT WILL GIVE INSIGHT IN HOW FAR THE COMPLEX DISTRIBUTION PROCESSES IN ESTUARIES CAN BE CAPTURED.
