Obiettivo
The Kyoto Protocol (KP) allows nations to partially offset CO2 emissions with carbon accumulated by forest management and "additional human induced" land use change, but no system yet exists to estimate national level sources and sinks in a "transparent and verifiable manner". Existing data sources (e.g. CO2 fluxes, satellite retrievals of vegetation greenness, forest inventories, CO2 measurements)provide valuable information on the terrestrial carbon cycle, but produce differing estimates on large-scale carbon uptake. CAMELS will develop a carbine, cycle data assimilation system which will utilise each of these data sources, in conjonction with the latest terrestrial ecosystem models (TEMs), to produce estimates of the European land carbon sink. The use of process-based TEMs and forest inventory models will allow the contribution of land-management to be isolated, as required by the KP.
