Model rotor experiments under controlled conditions

Objective

The pincipal objective of this project is to significantly reduce the -eisting uncertainties in rotor aerodynamic modeling by providing a measured database. The main existing problem areas are:

1) Three-dimensional effects on the rotating blade, mainly but not exclusively in stall, which change the sectional characteristics significantly;
2) Dynamic stall characteristics;
3) Inflow and blade load patterns for yaw misalignment;
4) The effect of boundary layer manipulators on rotating blades.

The uncertainties effect both performance predictions and dynamic load calculations. In the future, some of these problems may be addressed through Navier Stokes calculations. Presently NS solutions are being produced and need validation. The objectives of the project can be divided in short term and long term aims: a) to improve the aerodynamic kernel of the current aero-elastic design codes, based on Blade Element Momentum theory and b) to provide a database for Navier Stokes validation.
