Project description
5G networks and mmWave radar for airport surveillance
As the ongoing growth of air traffic puts airports under pressure for greater capacity and increased safety, an important investment and research effort is aiming to equip airports with Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS). In the past ten years, most of the world’s largest airports have initiated the implementation of an A-SMGCS Surveillance function together with the deployment of multilateration (MLAT) and surface movements radar (SMR). However, regional airports could not afford the implementation of such surface surveillance technologies because of prohibitive infrastructure costs. The EU-funded NewSense project will evaluate innovative, low-cost solutions for implementing A-SMGCS using the 5G network and mmWve radar sensors combined with artificial intelligence to position objects on the airport surface.
Objective
NewSense is a research and development project that aims at improving safety and efficiency of operations primarily in secondary airports with innovative low-cost surface surveillance solutions, based on 5G cellular networks for the long term, and mmWave radar for the medium term, allowing the implementation of affordable Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS).
