Monitoring of Environmental Practices for Sustainable Agriculture Supported by Earth Observation

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - ENVISION (Monitoring of Environmental Practices for Sustainable Agriculture Supported by Earth Observation)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2022-03-01 do 2023-11-30

For the past 38 months, the ENVISION project has intensively worked on how Earth Observation (EO) technology, combined with advanced analytical and machine learning methodologies along with heterogeneous types of data, can revolutionise the monitoring and evaluation of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This effort extends to a broader spectrum of environmentally and climate-friendly agricultural practices stemming from EU policy. Moving away from the traditional approach of monitoring, which often focuses narrowly on specific fields and times, ENVISION has shifted the focus towards more holistic, territory-wide, and all-year-round monitoring.
As an outcome of the project, the ENVISION solution has been developed, a commercial platform (https://platform.envision-h2020.eu/) that provides to the Paying Agencies (PAs) and Certification Bodies (CBs) with a robust and cost-efficient set of services allowing them to monitor continuously and systematically the agricultural land. ENVISION scaled-up on the wealth of data made available through GEOSS and Copernicus and its synergetic use with other data, coupled with ICT to develop and deliver the required products. Furthermore, ENVISION offers a mobile application (Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gr.draxis.envisionv2 App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/%CE%B5nvision/id6444343287) for farmers, as well as an add-on development tool for third parties and developers.
ENVISION prioritized user engagement from requirements identification through technical development, aligning with Design Thinking principles. The integrated platform underwent iterative improvement with continuous user input, leading to enhanced accessibility and analysis of agricultural data. The pilot phase demonstrated positive outcomes in Cyprus and Lithuania, showcasing the user-friendly and effective nature of Data Products. In Flemish and Serbian cases, specific products like SOC Monitoring and Crop Growth Monitoring received positive feedback. Dissemination efforts through various channels effectively communicated achievements and fostered a community around the project. As ENVISION concludes, its tangible impacts on agricultural practices, policy decisions, and environmental stewardship signify its success. The project's legacy is expected to shape the future of sustainable agriculture, setting new standards in data analysis and innovation. The ENVISION project has had a profound impact in various domains, thanks to its innovative services, comprehensive platform, and effective dissemination activities. The project's highest point not only showcases its achievements but also sets a benchmark for future endeavors in similar fields.
ENVISION's services have been a cornerstone of its success. These services, focusing on advanced agricultural data analysis and monitoring, have revolutionized the way stakeholders interact with and utilize agricultural data, and in CAP monitoring specifically. By providing accurate, timely, and detailed insights into various aspects of agriculture, ENVISION has enabled more informed decision-making. This has had a direct positive impact on agricultural practices, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. The introduction of innovative features like crop classification, mowing event detection, and soil coverage assessment has not only improved efficiency but also enhanced the precision of agricultural practices.
The ENVISION platform stands as a testament to the project's technological effectiveness. Its user-friendly interface, coupled with powerful data processing and analysis capabilities, has made it a preferred tool among its users. The platform’s ability to integrate and analyze diverse datasets has significantly contributed to the agricultural sector, offering stakeholders a comprehensive view of their operations and environment. The platform's scalability and adaptability mean that it can evolve with the changing needs of its users, ensuring its long-term relevance and utility.
The ENVISION project has made significant progress beyond the state of the art by developing and implementing innovative Earth Observation (EO) technology for agricultural monitoring. The project has successfully validated its business model, showcasing the adaptability and impact of its services in various agricultural scenarios. The results include further refinement and upscaling of business models based on stakeholder feedback and market analysis. The potential impacts encompass economic, social, and environmental aspects. In Cyprus and Lithuania, the project's data products have shown promising results in optimizing efficiency, reducing administrative burdens, and contributing to eco-friendly farming practices. The Flemish and Serbian business cases highlight the potential for informed decision-making, compliance with regulations, and positive contributions to soil health and environmental conservation. Overall, ENVISION's socio-economic impact extends to increased farmers' income, cost reduction, and sustainable land management practices, positioning it as a valuable asset in the EO industry with wider societal implications.
