Pan-European twinning to re-establish world-level Neuroscience Centre in Kiev (NEUROTWIN)

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - NEUROTWIN (Pan-European twinning to re-establish world-level Neuroscience Centre in Kiev (NEUROTWIN))

Reporting period: 2020-11-01 to 2022-07-31

The main objective of NEUROTWIN is to develop a world-level centre for research and education in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience in Ukraine, by implementing scientific experience and organizational practice of the renowned international Partners. This project will thus form the basis for a renaissance of the flagship of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (BIPH), as a European centre for excellence in this field. The Institute's rich history, intellectual traditions, and highly educated manpower will facilitate the process of integration into European networks. The extensive exchange of knowledge and experience between BIHP and world-renowned groups from the UK, Portugal, Austria, Germany and Sweden should ensure success of this integration. This twinning exercise will also widen scientific excellence and innovation capacity of all the Partners.
The objectives of NEUROTWIN include:
• Strengthening scientific excellence and innovation capacity of BIPH and twinning Partners in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience;
• Improving possibilities for BIPH international funding;
• Raising the scientific quality of Ukrainian early stage researchers in a field of Neuroscience;
• Boosting productive communication with the public and the policymakers in Ukraine, to advocate the importance of Neuroscience research for public health and biomedical education.
The NEUROTWIN Kick-off meeting were held in Kyiv, Ukraine (month 2). During the Kick-off meeting the management structure were established to set up and project management tools implemented in order to ensure the timely progress and completion of the tasks and activities scheduled. (WP6)
The website of the NEUROTWIN was launched: WP5
The Knowledge Transfer Committee organised three workshops on Knowledge Transfer. The focus of the workshops was centred on transfer of knowledge, methodology and current approaches as well as on developing and documenting research protocols. The training was performed by team leaders and invited experts for BIPH researchers. (WP1)
Two training events were organised in the framework of NEUROTWIN: Summer Science Week and Student Workshop. The focus of the events was centred on transfer of knowledge, methodology and current approaches from leading Ukrainian scientists to the students and early stage researchers. (WP2)
Two “Scientific Writing Workshops” centred on writing research papers were organised. The organization of these events had aims to train the BIPH researchers in preparation of scientific reports and original research articles for publication in high rank international journals. (WP3)
In the first reporting period the project consortium organized the “Grant Writing Workshop” for the BIPH´s scientific, management staff (financial and legal BIPH staff) as well as BIPH´s doctoral students and postdocs. NEUROTWIN’s is focused on the support and improvement of BIPH and its competitiveness in international funding and innovation. To achieve that the first two of a series of PGM trainings in the framework of the NEUROTWIN project were successfully organised in Kyiv and Vienna. These two training workshops were focusing on the transfer of knowledge in the area of “Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe project and grant management procedures and strategies”. Translational Research Office as well as Project Grant Management Department at BIPH have been established. (WP4)
The project consortium prepared a comprehensive CDE plan consisting of definition of aims and objectives of communication, dissemination and exploitation in NEUROTWIN; communication instruments for NEUROTWIN; identification of stakeholders and target audiences; exploitation and general risk assessment. The plan ensures the appropriate monitoring of the project outputs and adequate dissemination and exploitation activities, which will be reported in the frame of D5.6 (month 36) (WP5).
The first Annual Meeting was held Online on 22 June 2020 (WP6)
All these measures aimed to strengthening scientific excellence and innovation capacity of BIPH in a field of Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience.
The fulfillment of the Project will result in the enhancement the S&T capacity of BIPH and leading Participants in a field of Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience. The Project will also help raise the BIPH innovation capacity and competitiveness of BIPH researchers in international fundraising.
