Accurate Geofluid Properties as key to Geothermal Process Optimisation

Develop semi-empirical thermodynamic models for the properties of relevant solutes from supercritical reservoir to surface conditions

As part of task 4.3, this deliverable reports on data selection and re-processing, refinement of EoS and full formulation of EoS, extension to include other solutes, and incorporation into modelling tools.

GEOPRO KPI specification

As part of task 1.2, this delievarble will report on the KPIs benchmarked for success criterion for enthalpy calculation, scale reduction, bubble formation and supercritical “vectors to ore” performance.

Parameterization of thermodynamic models of H2O-NaCl-CaCl2-CO2 fluids

As part of task 3.3, the deliverable will report on the assessment of EOS based on the review of available experimental data of VLE combined with the new experimental data (training set measurement).

Cavitations experiments

As part of task 4.7, the deliverable reports on cavitation experiments with compositions representative for supercritical geothermal fluids in the multiphase flow assurance loop by inserting orifice plates in the pipe test section.

IDDP Case Study

As part of task 4.8, the deliverable reports on IDDP geothermal operation to include advanced Reservoir Modelling for IDDP-3, geochemical modelling and flow assurance modelling for IDDP-3.

Multi-phase experiments with high solute concentration geothermal fluids

As part of task 3.5, the deliverable reports on the experiments with high solute concentration geothermal fluids in the multiphase flow-assurance loop developed in WP2. The report will also include comparisons between the experimental results and the results from the 1D FAS with the new models developed in T3.3-T3.4 and implemented in WP2.

Impact of GEOPRO on LCOE

As part of task 6.1, the deliverable reports on the LCOE analysis performed for the three GeoPro test sites.

Helmholtz energy framework for single pipe solver

As part of task 2.4, this deliverable will report on the creation of the simplified version of the flow assurance simulator, such that the equations are solved for only a single pipe rather than a pipe network. The different EoS and different numerical options in the fluid as well as EoS solvers will be compared and analysed.

Multi-phase experiments with supercritical geothermal fluids

As part of task 4.6, the deliverable reports on experiments with the multiphase flow loop developed in WP2 using fluid compositions representative for supercritical geothermal fields.

1D transient FAS with exiting thermodynamic models

As part od task 2.2, the deliverable will report on the simulations of representative test cases for typical wellbore as well as topside pipes carried out for the three different sites in GEOPRO (Hengill/IDDP2&3, Insheim, Kilzidare). In addition to flow parameters such as flow rates, pressure profile, temperature profile, volume and mass fractions, the base line simulations will also include simulations of scaling- , corrosion-, and erosion rates based on the currently implemented models

Implement new thermodynamic models & reaction kinetics into 1D FAS

As part of task 2.3, the deliverable will report on the implementation of reaction kinetics into the 1D flow assurance simulator.

Experimental determination of heat capacities, enthalpies and volumetric properties in the system H2O-NaCl-CaCl2-CO2 +/- KCl, SO4

As part of task 3.2, this deliverable reports on the experimental measurements of key thermodynamic properties to close the knowledge gaps in pressure- and composition-dependence. This includes solubilities of salts, gases and mixed solid/gas solutions.

As part os task 34 the deliverable reports on performance of precipitation kinetics of selected solids from supercritical fluids

Insheim case study

As part of task 3.7, the deliverable reports on case study performed at Insheim geothermal operation.

Computational chemistry simulations of supercritical reservoir fluid chemistry

As part of task 45 the deliverable reports on use of computational chemistry to improve understanding of supercritical chemistry derive rigorous molecular insights into the molecularscale origins of empirical correlations and to inform the EoS development work of Task 43 with data and predicted trends for inter and extrapolation of experimental data

Data quality and precision specification

As part of task 1.4, the deliverable will report on confidence in existing data and suggest appropriate ways of factoring in uncertainty in the approaches and tools defined in the project. Identification and dealing with censored data, particularly those related to reliability and maintenance will be investigated.

Geothermal multiphase flow loop testbed

As part of task 21 the deliverable will report on the development of smallscale multiphase flow loop for geothermal fluid testing for fileds in Insheim Hengill and Kilzidare

Detailed Case study scenario specification

As part of task 1.3, the deliverable will report on the case studies that will be carried out to demonstrate the GEOPRO outputs. The case study targets will be written up as living documents, agreed by the users and signed on to by the development teams.

Impact of GEOPRO on environmental footprint on geothermal power

As part of task 6.2, the deliverable reports on the comparative LCA for the three test Geopro sites.

Zorlu case study

As part of task 38 the deliverable reports on the Zorlu case study centered on two operational problems that relate to poor knowledge of physicochemical properties of very CO2rich geothermal brines and carbonate scaling in surface pipelines and during reinjection

Implement new thermodynamic models into 3D FAS

As part of task 2.4, this deliverable reports on the newly developed and improved thermodynamic and reaction kinetics models from WP3 and WP4 that will be implemented into the 3D Large Eddy Simulation (LES) module of the Flowphys software. To ensure grid- and timestep convergent results, at least 3 different mesh sizes and 3 different timestep sizes will be tested.

Impact of GEOPRO on the sustainability of geothermal power

As part of task 6.3, the deliverable reports on estimatation of the cost and environment load reduction opportunity of GEOPRO in geothermal applications using knowledgebase DSS platform.

As part of task 44 the deliverable reports on parametrization of semiempirical kinetic equations and creation of models for the timedependence of scaling reactions from supercritical fluids

Gap and priority analysis for geochemical datasets and EoS

As part of task 3.1, the deliverable will report on data analysis achieved as a result of workshops, data comparison with the plant requirements including formulation of desired EoS structures, to provide frameworks for the data that are compatible with the users’ operating practices.

Knowledge base developed

As part of task 5.1, the delivearble reports on the setting up of the open Knowledge data base for geothermal fluid properties. A Bayesian approach will be used to update the databases to incorporate experience-based information.

Common GUI ready to use

As part of Task 5.3, the deliverable reports on development of the common graphical user interface (GUI) that will allow seamless integration of the geothermal flow assurance simulator, reservoir simulator, reaction kinetics, EoS, KBS, and DSS.
