Periodic Reporting for period 2 - ASSET (A holistic and Scalable Solution for Research, Innovation and Education in Energy Transition)

Actions and policies are needed among others to upskill the energy and industrial sectors’ staff, to cultivate new talents with multidisciplinary competencies, to continue and intensify research, to liaise industry with research, to promote exploitation of research results and to strengthen societal understanding of low carbon importance. European workforce needs re-skill and upskill to acquire the competences needed by the new green energy sector and processes. A significantly closer relationship between the industry and the academia than the existing one is essential to match market needs and workforce competences.
The energy transition will benefit society at large reducing pollution and ensuring a clean environment, but it will also imply a change of mindset, a change in well-established habits, consumption patterns, travelling and working behaviour etc. The energy transition must be social, the engagement of citizens with the energy transition is a critical factor for the success of the green transformation. They need to know about energy transition, learn how to be energy efficient and how to benefit from innovative energy-services and they need training to connect with the labour market.
Energy transition means the transition to a low-carbon society in order to make the energy sector sustainable. To reach this goal ASSET intends to:
• Strengthen the skills of sector operators;
• Cultivate new talents with multidisciplinary skills;
• Enhance collaboration between academia and industry
• Foster and get deeper engagement and interaction of and among energy transition stakeholders
• A community involving main energy transition actors, a space where target actors exchange resources and share the competencies required to support the energy transition. Additionally a Public Outreach Strategy was defined and implemented including tailored messages and activities to address each specific group of energy transition stakeholders. Four communication and dissemination campaigns to raise awareness about the project results and the energy transition have been set out.
• The project conducted a research on the social aspects of the energy transition, this research followed two directions: (1) Societal challenges in the energy sector, and (2) Knowledge-Skills-Competences required for energy transition and the skills gaps in the current labour market. Aiming at promoting the interdisciplinarity in research, innovation and education services, SSH components as well as learning components and outcomes associated to ethics, economics, research and innovation among other competences have been incorporated to ASSET´s educational offer. Besides a train the trainers workshop was organized to foster the incorporation SSH learning topics in "technical" courses.
• A conceptual framework and tools, based in the learning graph model, to facilitate and speed both the creation of new educational programmes and the replication/adaptation of the existing educational offer, by allowing the re-use of existing materials in different educational institutions and their application to different disciplines.
• Mechanisms to strengthen the collaboration among academia and industry. Best practices for mobility support mechanisms industry-academia have been identified and recommendations for their implementation made. The ASSET marketplace tool has been developed to facilitate the search of energy transition educational programmes for industry and to provide an instrument to directly request new educational programmes to the university.
• More than 40 educational programmes on energy transition related topics have been developed exploiting the ASSET learning graph concept and delivered via multiple delivery modes: open online, face-to-face, blended etc. The project educational offer comprises: 21 MOOCs , 2 of them specifically designed for citizens, 24 class-based and blended educational programmes, 5 interdisciplinary courses incorporating SSH disciplines and 2 industry on-demand courses. ASSET educational programmes are available in the EMMA and EIRIE-PANTERA platforms and will remain available for years after the end of the project.
• ASSET brings industry and academia very close and gives them the tools and means to directly interact so that the academia promptly senses the needs of the industry.
• The project delivered the framework and tools to quickly and easily update and develop new courses for students, researchers and engineers already in the labour market
• More than 40 innovative educational programmes to both qualify professionals to meet the challenges of the energy transition and to raise awareness among citizens.
