Sustainable management of mesopelagic resources

CORDIS oferuje możliwość skorzystania z odnośników do publicznie dostępnych publikacji i rezultatów projektów realizowanych w ramach programów ramowych HORYZONT.

Report on analysis of interactions among the mesopelagic community and with predators

Description and analysis of the trophic niche overlap and partition among the key species within each meso and bathypelagic communities for each case study locations where stable isotope data are availableEstimation of the annual energy and biomass removals by top predators mainly cetaceans and seabirds of major mesopelagic prey groups from the different European marine subregions The analysis will combine relative proportions and energetic densities of ingested prey as well as predator energetic requirements and population sizes

Appraisal of the capability for eDNA and egg/larval production to inform biomass estimates

The report will include an appraisal of the capability of environmental eDNA to inform about the taxonomic composition of mesopelagic microorganisms community focusing on fish as target group It will equally include an evaluation of the potential of the egg production method to estimate mesopelagic fish biomass It will indicate the information already available the research necessary and a pilot estimate using Maurolicus muelleri in the Bay of Biscay as model species

Simultaneous quantification of active, gravitational and DOC fluxes at range of contrasting sites

Simultaneous quantification of active gravitational and DOC fluxes at range of contrasting sites At multiple sites the three fluxes will be quantified simultaneously active flux using new acoustic observations of migrating organisms together with published sizebased relationships of carbon release gravitational flux using the prototype optical system deliverable 42 and physical samples eg from snowcatchers the DOC flux using water samples to quantify DOC concentrations together with estimates of turbulent mixing from historical data model output or opportunistic microstructure observations

A parameterized interface (Bayesian net) to determine the trade-offs and overall change in the value of the ecosystem services

This deliverable will provide a tool to evaluate the consequences of different harvest strategies Results will be based on the changes derived in the ecosystem services in value and will serve as an interface for helping on management decisions

Global and regionally-constrained biomass from models

We will use the ecosystem model APECOSM to simulate the globalscale dynamics of the mesopelagic communities on a 3D numerical grid with a 1 horizontal resolution over the period 19482016 Acoustic observations will be used to refine parameters estimates and assess the models predictions Global mesopelagic biomass predicted by APECOSM will be compared to the empirical estimates available in the literature

Report on Food-web structure from study regions from the ensemble of models

Documentation of the equations structure and parameterisation of each food web model together with baseline outputs on the abundances of food web components and biomass flows between them under contemporary environmental harvesting conditions at the locations to which they are applied

First estimate of the role of mesopelagic fish in storing carbon in the ocean

NEMOPISCESAPECOSM will provide global estimates of the role of mesopelagic fish in carbon sequestration and atmospheric CO2 levels under two different climate scenarios for instance RCP 45 and 85 and two fishing scenarios for instance no fishing and 50 of the biomass taken

First version of the Data Management Plan DMP outlined in accordance with H2020 guidelines for DMPs assuring that the research outcome of SUMMER is findable accessible interoperable and reusable FAIR

Model tools for quantifying role of mesopelagic fish in influencing the BCP

Describe the SUMMER advances on model tools for the representation on how mesopelagic fish affect the BCP.

Database of new and existing diet/trophic level data of key mesopelagic species and predators and of nutritional quality of mesopelagic organisms

The analysis of new samples in combination to historical studies will supply information to build a database on the main trophic links of key mesopelagic species and their predators, and on the nutritional quality of mesopelagic organisms.
