Title: Holistic Approach for Providing Spatial & Transport Planning Tools and Evidence to Metropolitan and Regional Authorities to Lead a Sustainable Transition to a New Mobility Era

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - HARMONY (Title: Holistic Approach for Providing Spatial & Transport Planning Tools and Evidence to Metropolitan and Regional Authorities to Lead a Sustainable Transition to a New Mobility Era)

Berichtszeitraum: 2022-06-01 bis 2023-02-28

The ultimate outcome of the project, the HARMONY Model Suite (HMS) has been delivered at TRL7. The HMS software has been developed, and selected modules have been applied for OXF, ROT, TUR and ATH metropolitan areas to simulate a variety of spatial, and passenger- and freight-transport use cases. The Transport and Spatial Data Warehouse was delivered. Travel demand data collection in OXF and demonstration of the autonomous robot in ROT were concluded. The transferability of the MS and the feed of the MS to European-wide models was assessed. Recommendations on updating the modelling aspects of SUMP framework and roadmaps on applying the metropolitan areas’ use cases has been delivered. Four 2-day training courses (Athens, Delft, London, Barcelona) and three demonstrations (Katowice, Turin, Rotterdam) on how to use and apply the MS took place. The exploitation plans and business models of the projects’ main outcomes were developed. The project concluded successfully with the final conference in Barcelona.
WP1: completed in RP2.
WP2 (P3): Integration and testing of the simulators to the HARMONY MS completed and the software was delivered (TRL7). The prognostic and diagnostic dashboard offering more than 200 KPIs incorporated in the MS. The MS was applied for ROT, OXF, TUR and ATH metropolitan areas. The MS Lite developed (TRL4). Github ready. Related training material and manual prepared and the MS was utilised in the training courses.
WP3 (P3): Finalisation of the Transport and Spatial Data Warehouse. Extensions to accommodate additional data generated by the MS, were integrated in the TSDW management dashboard.
WP4 (P3): The strategic simulator integrated to the MS: demographic forecasting, regional economy, land use transport interaction, land development, firm synthesizer, spatial interaction freight, synthetic population, and vehicle stock models. Related training material prepared.
WP5 (P3): Tactical passenger simulator including activity-based and dynamic travel behaviour models was finalised, applied for TUR and OXF and integrated to the MS. Related training material prepared.
WP6 (P3): The simulation of use cases on zero-emission zones, crowd shipping, micro-hubs and logistics facility location for ROT was finalised. The Tactical Freight Simulator integrated to the MS. Related training material prepared.
WP7 (P3): completed in PR2.
WP8 (P3): Assessed the transferability potential of the MS, translated its applications into recommendations for updating spatial and transport strategies in the SUMP framework and developed roadmaps for integrating traditional and new mobility services.
WP9 (P3): Co-creation activities to discuss the outcomes of applying the MS were finalised. The travel demand data collection in OXF concluded. The demonstration with drones and an electric van in OXF, and the delivery robot in ROT were finalised. Post-demonstration questionnaire surveys to stakeholders took place in OXF and ROT and in Trikala for public acceptance. Evaluation of all the activities concluded.
WP10 (P3): Constant online presence to promote results to a wide range of stakeholders at all geographical levels. Finalization of the Harmony MS manual, physical and online training materials. Harmony final event videos (organization, scriptwriting, publication of 10 videos per each conference session in the agenda as well as one conference promo video). Policy adaptation and standardization recommendations were delivered based also on input received from stakeholders at several events. The final exploitation plan and business models for the key outcomes of HARMONY were developed and also presented and discussed with the Research and Innovation Advisory Board
WP11 (P3): The amendment process initiated in RP2, continued and was finalised in RP3. The work of WP11 has increased due to the complex nature of the amendment. The RIAB was invited to several workshops to review HARMONY’s outcomes and provide feedback for the exploitation plans.
WP12 (P3): Completed in RP1
Beyond state-of-the-art: The HARMONY MS is a next generation platform that hosts a series of spatial and transport models for passengers and freight. Instead of using different platforms for strategic, tactical and operational planning; or for spatial and transport planning, the HARMONY MS is a platform that integrates them all and allows iinteractions among them. The MS also offers adaptors to connect Aimsun, Vissum and SUMO network models. It is the first platform in the market offering such integrated capabilities, while it also allows the simulation of several spatial and transport scenarios for passenger and freight new mobility services. The tactical simulator of the platform offers activity based models and prioritise the demand side in the transport planning practices that for decades now focuses mainly on the network and takes the demand side as a given.
Socio-economic impact: The HARMONY MS gives the opportunity to simulate scenarios and get a variety of KPIs regarding the economy, society, the environment etc. It redefines the way the demand is treated in the traditional planning approaches and gives the opportunity to check the impact of policies and measures on citizens and specific population groups across metropolitan areas. The MS was applied for ROT, OXS, TUR, ATH.
