Open Access Single entry point for scale-up of Innovative Smart lightweight composite materials and components

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - OASIS (Open Access Single entry point for scale-up of Innovative Smart lightweight composite materials and components)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2022-01-01 al 2022-11-30

The introduction of nanotechnologies in aluminium and polymeric composites in today’s industrialized systems as part of advanced materials and manufacturing processes in different sectors depends very much on understanding all basic processes that will contribute to overcoming the barriers that materials are currently facing to be introduced into the market. The main objective OASIS project pursued was to develop and organize a sustainable Open Innovation Test Bed for innovative scale-up of smart lightweight aluminium and polymer-based composite compounds and products to which Companies - and more precisely SMEs - can gain access through a Single Entry Point (SEP) to develop, test and adopt, new lightweight, high performance, multifunctional, safe and environmentally friendly high value materials, components and structures in a cost-effective and sustainable way. The OASIS SEP, created based on a collaboration agreement reached among 12 partners, gives access to an ecosystem of 12 nanotechnology manufacturing pilot lines, operating under a sustainable nanomanufacturing framework. Technological services including material selection, Manufacturing processes, Product and process Design, Modelling & simulation, Characterisation & testing, Sustainable-manufacturing diagnosis, Environmental friendliness and nano-safety, Safe-by-design approaches and Life cycle analysis as well as business support services for access to finance and optimised business plans definition associated to the 12 pilot lines close OASIS one-stop full package offer.
During 47 months, OASIS has aimed at creating an ecosystem of 12 pilot lines and associated services to provide qualified nano-materials, nano-intermediates and no-enabled products to meet industrial needs and accelerate market uptake of innovative lightweight multifunctional nano-enabled products.

From January 2019, OASIS aimed at fulfilling market potential of nano-enabled multifunctional lightweight products by:
- gathering the manufacturing capacity of 12 pilot lines from nanoparticles to final product,
- establishing a thorough service offer for associated technical & business development,
- granting direct access to the whole ecosystem through a Single Entry Point, active beyond the project, for easier access especially for SMEs.
OASIS has delivered exceptional results with significant immediate or potential impacts. Results produced by the project show a high exploitation potential.

The OASIS ecosystem gathers 12 pilot lines and associated complementary services.
The pilot lines are divided in 3 categories: 3 PLs for nanoscale structures in unprocessed form with intrinsic functionalities, 5 PLs for intermediate product with nanoscale features, and 4 Pilot Lines for nano-enabled products. All of them operate under a Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Framework (SNF) ensuring the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the pilot lines, built and implemented during the project. The SNF sets up the basic requirements for a screening methodology to quickly assess the sustainability of a nanomanufacturing pilot line (NPL). It provides guidance for diagnosis, implementation, and monitoring, to proactively improve nano-sustainability performances in NPLs, considering their sustainability management and results. The model can be used by NPLs to achieve their intended outcomes in the field of nano-sustainability.
The SNF is intended to be applied to any NPL regardless of its size, type and activities. Similarly, the model could be scaled to manage the sustainability of a manufacturing area/plant that integrates multiple NPLs.
The definition and steps towards the SNF implementation has been the basis of CWA17935 “Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Framework” published by CEN in October 2022. This document describes and specifies the requirements of a simplified Sustainability Nanomanufacturing Framework for sustainability management in NPLs, appropriate to their size, management capabilities and sustainability priorities. This document can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve the sustainability in NPLs.
Regarding associated services, a high added-value public catalogue accessible to industries and users through https://ecosystem.project-oasis.eu and promoted with organisations, webinars and workshops was created and proves the high potential and quality of services OASIS, as a full-package offer Single Entry Point (SEP), can offer.

During the project, 6 global leaders ACCIONA, THALES, VDL, AIRBUS, PLEIONE and FORD, representing high impact sectors (transportation, construction and energy), had the opportunity to implement in real cases the developed tangible materials and components through the 12 NPLs and associated services. Through the development of six industrial Showcases, the facilities, capabilities and services of the OASIS OITB were validated.
The OASIS OITB Ecosystem was open to industries through 2 open calls. Democases represented the first direct business experiences of the OITB. 11 democases were developed allowing to evaluate the OASIS OITB efficiency with the products and services it offers. The open calls were the first opportunity to test and propose the catalogue to applicants for Democases. The selected projects were developed following quality management processes previously defined. The development involved technical and business services that service providers identified according to the customer’s needs. Business support services support the end-users to industrialisation and commercialisation stages. At the end of the development period, the performances of the Democases were assessed and the efficiency of the OASIS OITB to answer the democases was evaluated.
The high level of democases developed has been demonstrated by the award received by democase BioFLY during the Advanced Manufacturing event celebrated in Madrid in 2022.

The OASIS ecosystem became the first Single Entry Pointwith a full-package offer of products and associated services to develop lightweight multifunctional polymer- and metallic-based composites. The SEP operates under a collaboration agreement coordinated by TECNALIA VENTURES ensuring the sustainability of the ecosystem after the project end.
The Innovation brought by the OASIS project
- Unique combination of European NPLs, technological & non-technological services throughout the entire value chain in one OITB.
- Access via a SEP providing direct connection to a set of relevant actors for easier and accelerated innovation and product commercialization.
- Open access to multiple actors: companies, SMEs, individual, academia, RTOs.
- “Right material at the right place” approach for optimized design by combination of materials: products based on metal or/and on polymers.
- User involvement: OASIS will not only deliver direct services but will also, in the whole development process, deliver the “education” on nanotechnologies to prepare future technology transfer. Adapting to the user’s company size and experience on nanotechnology will be at the core of business management by the SEP.
- Sustainable manufacturing ecosystem, involving demanding common rules for quality, environment, safety and productivity.
