Deliverables
High resolution mapping by means of drone assisted and ground photogrammetry on exceptional large scale crystalline basement exposures will be performedThese mappings will be used as input for numerical geometrical 3D reconstruction of fracture networksSamples taken in the field will be used for petrophysical testing and microfabric investigations in the laboratoryAll obtained data will be implemented in numerical models in order to investigate the geothermal potential of the considered reservoir
Characterization of scalingDeliverable about scaling will consists in a report containing all of the analytical results obtained from the characterization of scaling by X ray diffraction optical microscopy scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDX and Raman analyses Failure of this part might be due to the lack of scaling that would be a very good point for the tested power plants
Brine transportation field tests reportA report presenting the tested high temperature brine transportation technologies used on the field Onsite tests results are very important for upscaling geothermal plant with buried pipes The success of the field tests is related to the availability to fond on the market adapted material able to resist to high temperature and high salinity versus time
Evaluation of outcrop-analogues of the four Variscan reservoir typesBased on high resolution mapping supported eg by drone assistance and photogrammetry of selected Variscan basement exposures D51 the petrological and the structural features folds and thrusts foliations fractures etc will be characterized quantitatively and in 3D These data will be presented as numerical structure models as a basis for the reservoir modelling D56 There is no risk to fail with data set production it is just an issue to guarantee a high quality level
Performance results analysis report from the 3 first demo sitesData and feedback of the first demonstrations and recommendation of improvement
Summary of petrophysical analysisPetrophysical analyses are designed to provide data about the reservoir properties of rocks The report will compile petrophysical petrographical sedimentological when necessary and mineralogical data obtained on cores for an optimal characterization of reservoirs Failure is very unlikely because of the presence of cores and multiple approaches to be performed
ORC user’s manual including installation procedureDescription of ORC operating procedures
Summary of additional heat production capacities at the Soultz sous Forêts siteA report compiling the thermal field results obtained on the Soultz plant in term of produced additional heat. These thermal results are very relevant for geothermal industry and thus with the project. The gap between the observed additional heat produced during the tests, and the planned heat will be a mean for measuring the success factor.

Tool will consider specific site features, different possible technical configurations and will determine the optimal EGS technology configuration and operation for a specific site. This deliverable is crucial for project as a whole and more specifically to following deliverables: D4.5, D7.2, D7.3 and D7.4.

Methodology and tool for an economic evaluation of end-of-field life conversionDecisionmaking framework and support tool that uses different input data such as specific heat extraction technology environmental data and proximity to end users and a grid The goal is to compare different options for heat andor electricity production and to choose the optimal one This deliverable highly depends on the deliverable D71 and will be developed based on the results of task T71
Strategies and recommendations for stimulation operations for the four Variscan reservoir typesBased on the results of D51 to D56 and D58 to D59 we will evaluate stimulation strategies for the four Variscan reservoir types The geological technical and financial risk analysis of the stimulation actions are an essential part not only for the demos sites but also in view of the European scale D74 to D78
Open Access Decision Support Tool for Optimal Usage of Geothermal Energy VFHydro-thermal model using VSP analysis and colder reinjection tests

Summary of chemical and physical tests for colder reinjectionReport compiling the chemical and physical measurements obtained during cold reinjection tests The collected datasets are appropriate with the project accomplishment The quality of the results depends on the robustness of onsite measurements sensors optic fiber
1D/2D and dual porosity/DFN models of borehole fractures and hydraulic circulation simulationsThis deliverable aims at providing and testing the influence of permeability structures of various scale on the actual productivity, injectivity of a borehole. It will help to assess whether faults are acting as conduits or barriers to flow and will help to quantify the influence of the fracture network and the matrix porosity/permeability to the flow rate. It serves as a basis for the larger scale 3D models of D 3.3 and D 3.9.
List of EU wide perspective EGS projectsThis summary will list the most perspective future EGS projects throughout Europe based on the new andor improved strategies and will act as a base for future activities in different geological settings The number of future perspective EGS projects is strongly conditional on the economic transferability of the gained knowledge to further regions
Performance results analysis report from the 3 second demo sitesData and feedback of the second series of demonstration and recommendation of improvement
Database of petrophysical and fluid physical properties and recommendations for model parametrization of the four Variscan reservoir typesThis deliverable sums up the results of all investigations within Task 51 and Task 32 needed for Task 52 in one comprehensive database cf Br et al 2017 and will give based on the collected data recommendations on how to statistically deal with the measurements to process them for model parametrization This will also be the basis the evaluate rock or reservoir heterogeneity and can allow for stochastic evaluation or modelling of the four Variscan reservoir types
Mapping of potential end-usersThe objective of this phase is to find users for the heat resource close to our production sites. We will achieve this by using our local network (mayors, etc…) and also by engaging with industrial and agricultural networks at regional and national levels in order to find new business willing to start an activity with cheap an sustainable heat. Success criteria: input to UNIZG-FER’s decision-making support tool.
Summary of Goettingen site optimization for integration of geothermal resources in the energy supplyThe Goettingen demo site allows to compile the experience in the transfer from an existing fossil fuelbased to a geothermal heat supply system This report will not only focus on technical issues but also on systemrelevant and sociological aspects The relevance of the aspects will be also discussed in the European context
Geothermal energy potential development in different geological conditionsTo choose and map the best locations among the evaluated sites for EGS demonstration projects in various geological conditions using D61 Projects that will be the most economically feasible and viable within market environment will be identified This deliverable is one of important project results and highly depends on deliverable D71
Field-based characterisation of the four reservoir types completedWhile D54 focuses on the delivery of data sets for the reservoir modelling D56 this delivery is the final report on the fieldbased petrological and structural characterisation of the four Variscan reservoir types This part also goes beyond the reservoir scale to evaluate the results at European scale D74 to D78 The results depend on the quality of the other deliverables but there is nearly no risk to get results at all
Static and dynamic geothermal models of the four Variscan reservoir types at reservoir scale or as conceptual modelsThis deliverable will describe the initial models newly developed or preexistent at the different partners which are intended to be used as collaborative platform to integrate and refine the understanding of the geothermal system at outcrop analogue or reservoir scales Also the merits and flaws of the different models will be described based on the geological local conditions and degree of knowledge based on available data
Optimal usage of geothermal potential on already existing geothermal pilot sitesUsing the D71 an analysis of the existing geothermal pilot sites in Variscan geology Gttingen in Germany Havelange in Belgium with already existing infrastructure and undertaken evaluations of geothermal potential is to be conducted Optimal wayof future geothermal energy usage on the existing pilot sites will be determined This deliverable highly depends on deliverable D71
Roadmap for heat production from EU main geological contextsD515 will gather mapping and data of most promising site to establish a strategy for heat exploitation from Sedimentary context using heat demand endusers such as agricultural or urban close to oil wellsGraniticmetamorphic context using heat available from an operating EGS plant producing fluid at low temperature and an existing district heatingThe report will deliver a list of most promising sites for heat exploitation and what will be the main capacities
Review and selection of outcrop-analogues of the four Variscan reservoir types in regard to sample collectionBased on literature research, own mapping data and field campaigns, we will present a selection of outcrops most representative for the four Variscian reservoir types to (a) allow sample collections for laboratory tests and (b) to characterize the petrological and tectonic setting in terms of geothermal reservoir potential. This basic work is relevant for D5.2, D5.5 to D5.9. There is no risk of failure to find adequate outcrops, it is just an issue on the quality level of the outcrops.
