Development of GRASP radiative transfer code for the retrieval of aerosol microphysics vertical-profiles from space measurements and its impact in ACE mission

Deliverables

Advances in new GRASP/GARRLiC configurations

New approach for obtaining vertical profiles of aerosol microphysical properties based on backscatter lidar and polarized sky radiances measurements will be studied. Also, high-spectral resolution measurements in the UV region will be incorporated

Minutes of kick-off meeting and report about board constitution.

Minutes of kick-off meeting and report about board constitution for the action

GRASP/GARRLiC capabilities and sensitivity to errors in the inputs.

The capabilities of the GRASP/GARRLiC scheme will be evaluated using the synthetic aerosol database. The use of different channel will be discussed and also the sensitivity to systematic and random errors in the input optical data.

GRASP joint inversion application for CALIPSO and POLDER data.

The GRASP joint inversion will be applied to the existing database of POLDER space polarimetry and CALIPSO space lidar. The instruments flew on different platforms and the joint inversion is applied only when measurements are collocated.

GRASP/GARRLiC capabilities for nighttime retrievals.

The combination of lidar and star/moon photometry data will be used for retrieval of aerosol microphysical properties. Again, the advances will be implemented in GRASP. Another concept to explore is the use of sky cameras during the night that acquire relative radiances of the moon.

Report on training and education activities.

We will discuss the organization and attendance of students to our summer schools and workshops. This report will also include a description of the participation of students in conferences.

Development of an algorithm using 3β+2α information for the classification of aerosol size and absorption type

Development of an algorithm using 3β+2α information for the classification of aerosol size and absorption type. Such classification will be the input in the stand-alone inversion. It will be done both for spherical and non-spherical particles (dust)

Intercomparisons of stand-alone lidar inversion versus in-situ airborne data from experimental field campaigns.

Retrievals by the stand-alone inversion will be compared with airborne in-situ instrumentation during special field campaigns such as DISCOVER-AQ organized by NASA, SHADOW organized by the University of Lille and ORACLES where both NASA and the University of Lille participated. Such database is unique for evaluation of aerosol microphysics vertical-profiles, and particularly for aerosol single scattering albedo.

Final report about all the results of the project and long-term sustainability plan.

The report will include scientific results and also the impact of communication, dissemination and training activities. We will discuss the possibility of continuing the consortium with applications for funding to EU and national agencies.

Inter-comparisons of GRASP retrieved parameters for different polarimetry configurations.

Using the synthetic database the capability of different polarimetry configurations will be studied using GRASP

Evaluation of GRASP joint inversion results for airborne data and intercomparisons with the stand-alone 3β+2α inversion from HSRL-2 measurements.

During NASA field campaigns airborne data of polarimetry and lidar were acquired, and here we present a summary of the analysis of applying the GRASP joint inversion to these data. Inter-comparisons with the stand-alone liar inversion is also included.

Complete characterization of the stand-alone 3β+2α lidar inversion

Discussion about the capabilities of the stand-alone 3β+2α liar inversion for retrieving aerosol microphysical and absorption properties
