Hybrid AIRcraft seating requirement specification and Design

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - HAIRD (Hybrid AIRcraft seating requirement specification and Design)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2017-01-01 al 2017-12-31

HAIRD project has delivered a new design for a next generation aircraft seating which is comfortable, healthy (reduction of Deep Vein Thrombosis, DVT risk), light-weight, fast to disassemble, easy to dismantle, cost efficient to produce, highly recyclable and reliable in structural integrity.
All these points help to reduce the weight that has a direct impact in the reduction of the fuel consumption and therefore, CO2-emisions. Also, the employment of new materials with high recyclability leads to increase the recyclability of the components which consequently result in reduction of seating environmental impact.
HAIRD is a seating designed to reduce DVT risk (footrest, dynamic seat base, and glass and bottle support), ensure its multi-functionality (mobile support and placards compartment) and using simple surfaces for composite manufacturing (Sheet Moulding Compound, SMC, and Wet Compression Moulding, WCM). On the other hand, legs, luggage bar, armrest, footrest, headrest, tray-table, glass and bottle support, and mobile support has been designed for easy disassembling and dismantling. The weight of HAIRD seat is 8.56kg and 10kg for economy class and economy class plus, respectively. Moreover, a 95% of the weight of the seat is recyclable.
The fact that the application of conventional technologies (SMC and WCM) are used to design a new generation aircraft seating is a novelty and HAIRD design is the first seating where they are applied. On the other hand, a novel design of headrest has been developed. These two points have allowed to submit a patent for the whole HAIRD design and an industrial design protection for HAIRD’s headrest.
