Deliverables
Review of measures aimed at decreasing nitrate pollution. The work proposed here builds on insights and results gathered in recent national and EU-wide projects and long-term regional case-studies. The available literature, databases and recent results from ongoing projects will reviewed to provide an overview and assessment of the effectiveness and efficiency of (best) measures and practices aimed at decreasing nitrate pollution of drinking water reservoirs. The results of this review will be reported.
Report (or special edition of appropriate journal) on “Advancing MAPs as vehicles for reduced conflict on drinking water pollution from agricultural sector”The findings of the MAPS within WP2 will be reported or published in a special edition of appropriate journal on Advancing MAPs as vehicles for reduced conflict on drinking water pollution from agricultural sector
Evaluation report on barriers and issues in providing integrated scientific support for EU policyA workshop for representative EU-level actor organisations will be organised in cooperation with WP2 multi-actor platforms and with input from WP6. Prior to this workshop, a desk study is carried out with an evaluation about the current scientific support for different EU policies related to water quality, such as the water framework directive, nitrates directive and Directive on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides. The evaluation includes assessments of the role of EU research projects and service contracts, reports, web sites and scientific literature for EU policies related to quality of drinking water resources. This desk study is reported and provides points for discussion for the workshop.
Report on most promising measures and practicesA framework will be developed, largely based on the four main assessment criteria proposed in Task 4.1, which allows the identification of most promising measures and practices, in an unbiased manner. The results of the identification of most promising measures and practices will be reported.
Report on the evaluation of the decision support and information tools and measures completedThe evaluation of a selection of decision support tools and measures in FAIRWAY case study sites at farm, catchment and regional scale will be reported.
Report on governance arrangements in casesThe comparative assessment of governance arrangements in the case studies will be reported.
Dissemination and Communication Strategy (first draft completed by MS8.1 but subject to ongoing revision)The development of the strategy and time table of dissemination and communication the project and the results of the projects at the EU level and at the level of the case studies
Report with recommendations for Water Safety PlansThe results of evaluation of strengthening the use of Water Safety Plans with involvement of all relevant actors, including farmers and citizens, will be reported. Critical issues for diffuse pollution of small supplies and private spring-water supplies with nitrate and pesticides will be investigated in several case studies.
Review report of Agri-Drinking Water quality Indicators and IT/sensor techniques, on farm level, study site and drinking water sourceA review will be carried out to review, select and prioritize Pressure Agri-Drinking Water quality Indicators (on farm level) on farm level, study site and drinking water source. The results of this review will be reported.
Report on policy analysis on EU and national level MSThe analysis of coherence and consistency of EU and national policies will be reported.
Scientific publications, based on the work done in Task 3.1-3.3Scientific publications with the results of the review selection and prioritization of Pressure AgriDrinking Water quality Indicators
Recommendation report on the most promising activities, policies and tools using the results of WP2-WP6 and assessments with integrated assessment tools at national and EU level. The results of integrated assessments and recommendations of most promising measures policies and tools at national and EU level will be reported
Report on costs and benefits, including riskA report will be delivered with the assessment of the costs and benefits for farmers, water companies and society, based on selected evaluation criteria.
Report summarising all the MAP activities and experiences conducted during the project periodThe activities and findings of the MAPs will be summarized in a report
Synthesis report on the iterative process of knowledge and practice exchange in the FAIRWAY project for integrated scientific support for relevant EU-policiesA synthesis report will be prepared joining results of WP2 WP6 and results of Task 71 72 and 73 The report will serve as an integrated scientific support for relevant EUpolicies related to drinking water quality ie the Drinking Water Directive Nitrates Directive Water Framework Directive and Directive on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides as well for the Common Agricultural Policy
Report and leaflets with evaluation of all indicatorsThe results of the review, selection and prioritization of State and Impact Agri-Drinking Water quality Indicators, with reference to case study site and drinking water source, will be summarized in a report and leaflet.
Report on actors’ feedback on the evidence based practices for water quality improvement of the different FAIRWAY case studies and FAIRWAY project interim resultsThe stakeholder feedbacks on the evidence based practice in the case studies and on FAIRWAY project interim results will be reported
Scientific publication about support toolsScientific publication about the development of a decisionsupport framework for advice training and communication strategies to establish common awareness for diffuse pollution of vulnerable drinking water resources among farmers
Recommendation report/ synthesis report on decision-support systemsA report will be delivered describing the development of a decisionsupport framework for advice training and communication strategies to establish common awareness for diffuse pollution of vulnerable drinking water resources among farmers
Report on cost efficient management modelsBased on the case studies, best practices and new opportunities will be identified and analysed with respect the governance aspects, i.e. the pollution control effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, coherence and conflicts between nutrient and pesticide policies implementation as well as incentives for farmers compliance. The results of this analysis will be reported
Technical report of the review of existing support tools. Research brief of reviewA report including the results of the review of tools that are used by farmers to manage their nitrogen and pesticide use
A description of a decision support framework for advice, training and communication strategiesA decision support framework will be derived based on a review adaptation demonstration and evaluation of existing decisionsupport tools for advice training and communication in order to inform mitigation and establish common awareness for diffuse pollution of vulnerable drinking water resources among farmers and water suppliers
Paper on lacks and spillover, narrative on actor perspectivesThe results of the review of Tasks 6.1 and 6.2 and possible legal and policy shortcomings that may lead to non-compliance of environmental objectives in rural areas will be reported. The report will include an examination of coherence and consistency combining a bottom up and a top down approach.
Policy brief providing input and options for coherent, legitimate and sustainable governance approachesLegitimate governance arrangements and effective regimes to prevent diffuse pollution of European fresh water due to agriculture taking into account EU legal requirements and the national and regional specific aspects will be designed and reported
A workshop at the start of the project for setting up the multi-actor platforms in the FAIRWAY cases studies which actors should be included and how will this MAP be managed?
Phone App –Pesticides (refers to the research approach of the particular case study)A phone app will be developed to provide guidance on the application disposal and environmental risks associated with different pesticides in drinking water catchments
Development of a website for internal communication within the FAIRWAY project
FAIRWAYiS website final versionThe final version of the website of FAIRWAY includes all activities and deliverables of the project
Video/film presentations explaining the scientific issues underlying drinking water qualityA videofilm will be made by a professional film producers in order to explain the scientific issues underlying drinking water quality in one or more case studies
