Report on the ethics requirements related to collection, storage and processing of personal data

A report analyzing the ethics requirements related to collection, storage and processing of personal data obtained through focus groups and other end user engagement.

Food regulatory status of the chemicals for HNT modification or as active substances

The food regulatory status of the chemicals intended for use in HNT modification or as active substances will be recorded. This will included a check of all substances for listing in the EU- Plastics Regulation No. 10/2011 or the Food Additives Regulation No. 13333/2008, Flavouring Regulations No 1334/2008, 872/2012, for any other approvals in EU, member states or USA, existing evaluations (e.g. by EFSA, German BfR, FDA), available summaries of toxicological data (e.g. at ECHA). An evaluation on not yet approved substances will be provided regarding their perspective for approval based on the available data and a preliminary estimate on toxicology data gaps will be given as well. All will be used for the Dossier in order to obtain a food contact approval for active packaging.

Report on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

A report providing the environmental analysis of the HNTs-based antimicrobial films production, bioactive food packaging production and the use of the produced nano-films as packaging materials for fresh meat, dairy and bakery products. This report will identify and assess the potential environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the target materials and packaged food considering as well waste management and post consumption implications.

Manuscript with physico-chemical characterisation of HNTs and HNT hazard characterization

A report covering the entire range of parameters needed for hazard and exposure assessment: chemical composition, size distribution in appropriate media, primary size, surface chemistry and BET surface area for a selection of 15 different carbon nanotubes.

Report on Social-Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and Social acceptance

This report will identify and assess the social and socio-economic benefits of the products which will be able to extend food shelf life and enhance food safety while maintaining taste, nutrition, colour, etc.

Report on additional barriers from Stakeholders Forum

A report analyzing other barriers related to regulatory, legal, scientific or technical aspects that have not yet been identified in addition to the barriers to commercialisation and exploitation outlined in the above tasks

Assessment plan for food products packaged in NanoPack films

An assessment plan for the antimicrobial activity of NanoPack films will be designed to test the film for foodborne pathogens including bacteria and fungus.

Establishing governance structure

A report confirming the Governance structure, including organizations and persons within these organizations as explained in the structure, as well as the roles, responsibilities and activities of the different committees and other decision rules.

Technical dossier for submission of an application in EU

Human and environmental risk assessment, ethics and chemical regulation is included in a final output of a technical dossier ready for submission as an application in the EU in M36

Communication plan

A communication and dissemination plan defining key messages, positioning statements and target audiences, and selecting appropriate tools and channels (including relevant conferences and events) to meet the information needs of the target audiences. This plan will be divided among activities to be carried out by EUFIC for dissemination on a Europe-wide basis, and activities to be carried out by individual partners within their own countries and local stakeholder networks.

Protocol concluding conference

The protocols of the concluding conference at the end of the project in Brussels to present the final results to key target audiences (opinion leaders/regulators, food manufacturers associations (including SMEs), retailers, consumer organisations, the media and the scientific community). A webinar will be recorded and made publicly available.

Project-specific innovation approach and innovation management process

This report will describe a project-specific innovation management approach and plan, based on innovation/exploitation theory and process concepts as relevant in the food packaging and food manufacturing domain. It will provide for both a (a) conceptual framework for all partners to work towards the final outcome of this project, namely, marketable, novel next generation food packaging, and (b) a process to follow in all project work concerned with business case development, business planning, and preparation for market introduction.

A project identity and specific project website

A corporate identity for NanoPack will be developed to ensure a common graphic line (project leaflet, website, presentation templates etc.) for all communications material produced by the consortium. A specific website for the project will be set-up and maintained by EUFIC for the duration of the project and for a further 3years after the project completion. Its structure will be: i) An external website (accessible to everyone) that will be the main information resource of the project (describing project objectives, partners, work areas and results. An external website (accessible to everyone) will be the main information resource of the project (describing project objectives, work areas, results and partners. ii) An additional internal platform or extranet (restricted area), designed and used to share preliminary results and internal documents (e.g. working papers, deliverables progress, calendar of events) amongst project partners, the Scientific Advisory Board and the European Commission Officers.

A mix of communication tools

• Two project leaflets will be produced in English, one presenting the project’s main elements (at the beginning) and another summarising project achievements at the end, to be distributed through partners’ networks and at relevant conferences and events, and translated as necessary by partners for local use. • Two articles in EUFIC’s multi-lingual Food Today newsletter will be produced to raise awareness of the project and highlight project findings, with electronic distribution to 47,000 health professionals, educators, opinion leaders/regulators, the media, industry, consumers and other multipliers. FoodToday articles are in 12 languages: EN, FR, DE, IT, ES, CZ, GR, HU, HR, PL, PT, SK and recently added TR. • Two articles will be produced for the regular EFFoST Newsletter which is distributed electronically to more than 100,000 food scientists and technologists throughout the European food industry. • Press releases on the project and its results will be written in English and translated into the partners’ languages. They will be sent to the European press and national journalists (the latter with the help of partners). • Popular articles, written by participants for non-specialists will also be placed in relevant international and national magazines for relevant audiences (e.g. consumer magazines), using Open Access to ensure articles are accessible to everyone. • Two articles will be produced for the EFFoST “Taste of Food” online journal that translates scientific development into a form that can be understood by food SMEs (>78% of European food companies are micro-sized with less than 9 employees). In general, these have no in-house scientific expertise but since they are such a major sector of the European food manufacturing sector, implementation of successful research is dependent on getting the dissemination to this group. • A paper will be produced for “New Food”, the largest English language trade magazine for the food industry. EFFoST is a member of its editorial board. • A specific section about the project will be created on www.eufic.org, EUFIC’s multi-lingual website in 11 languages with currently over 0.8 million visit sessions per month, to drive traffic to the NanoPack website. Mutual links will be established with project partners’ websites and other organisations working or with interest in this area. • A minimum of 2 webinars on the project will be produced based on interviews and/or presentations with main project partners involved in development and innovation activities and promoted through social media and the partners’ networks to increase outreach. • Relevant scientific papers will be produced for the Elsevier scientific journals Food Control. Trends in Food Science & Technology and Innovative Food Science & Emerging Technologies which are formally EFFoST affiliated journals. Editorials relating to the project outcomes will be included on a regular basis. • An infographic explaining the technology of antimicrobial surfaces as applied in active food packaging products for a general public audience will be produced and translated as necessary by partners for local use. • A social media presence will be established to ensure wider dissemination and reach target audiences and drive traffic to the NanoPack website. A dedicated NanoPack LinkedIn page will be set up to promote engagement with the professional community. Dissemination of project updates will also take place through a EUFIC-managed twitter account dedicated to dissemination of news from international research collaborations (@SciFoodHealth). • An e-newsletter providing updates on project developments (2/year) will be established and sent to EUFIC’s 47,000 subscribers, as well as to stakeholders on national databases of all partners. To assess impact on our stakeholders from the project e-newsletters, the final 3 e-newsletters will be accompanied by a feedback questionnaire (already prepared)
