UAV technology becomes more and more affordable as flying platform, however sensors and systems could be used on UAV-s should be studied and tested together with drifters giving simultaneous ground truth information in certain point at sea. The main objective of UAVs is to provide operational information about (i) areal extent of oil spill and (ii) relative variability within the spill so that the combating could be planned/conducted in the best possible way.

As navigation buoys are naturally located in key points of the fairways, SmartBuoys would provide the data about sea state exactly from where the vessels need it the most. Probability of oil spills is also highest on fairways, which motivates to equip SmartBuoys with oil detection sensors and having a real time early warning reporting system.

Flow-through systems on board,Ships Of OPportunity (SOOP) so-called Ferryboxes, allow to enhance the system with oil detection capability. Relevant desing and test results of systems reporting the oil detection results in real time will be presented in the deliverable.

In-situ oil detection sensors – technology overview and experiment design

Deliverable deals with technology review and tests of available on market oil sensors is made and tests with selected sensors performed both in lab and field conditions. Prevailing measurement method of oil sensors commercially available today is the UV fluorescence, performance of every particular sensor technology is dependent on oil type to be detected and therefore related to fluorescence intensity in case of different wavelengths, will be analysed in deliverable.
