Thought-leadership document(s) produced on priorities arising from meeting between the Science-Policy Panel and senior policy-makers. These will provide expert assessment of Atlantic VMEs and EBSAs on ecological connectivity, MPA network design including for the High Seas, and influence of ecosystem goods and services valuations on Atlantic MSP, with implications for Blue Growth.

Recent MOW and AMOC correlations

Report of a time series of inter-annual to decadal MOW distribution in the eastern Atlantic and its correlation with AMOC transport. Data from the Arco observing system and RAPID arrays will be used to estimate correlations between AMOC and MOW.

Final report outlining all ATLAS knowledge transfer activities undertaken. The report will cover methods, activities, results and measurable impacts.

Report prepared on the potential and limits of meta-barcoding of eDNA to assess biodiversity and the quantitative PCR approach to detect and quantify biomass for upcoming policy needs such as GES, and also for Blue Growth to look for targeted organisms with bioprospecting potential.

Reproductive tissue collections for ATLAS

Report on the species having tissue collections to be made available to ATLAS for reproductive histology to understand species reproductive and dispersal strategies and how these affect genetic connectivity.

Genetic tissue collections for ATLAS

Report on the set of existing species for which tissue collections have been gathered and made available to ATLAS for genetic connectivity studies.

Validity, legitimacy and acceptability of ecosystem valuations

Q-sort method applied and interviews conducted to assess validity, legitimacy and acceptability of ecosystem valuation methods.

Organic matter composition and seafloor activity

Community respiration rates based on in situ O2 consumption as a function of key physical parameters (flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen) and in relation to biogeochemical characteristics (lipid and amino acid composition) of the OM and faunal characterization (community composition, biomass) at the different study sites.

Biodiversity, biogeography and GOODS classification system under current climate conditions and future IPCC scenarios

Report on the predictive species and habitat distribution models (SDMs, HDMs) using quality-assured occurrences of VME indicator taxa and deep-sea fish species, outputs from VIKING20 mixing and transport, and data on realistic organic matter supply. SDMs will be used to refine GOODS classification for these taxa. Report prepared on potential for changes in biodiversity, the refined GOODS classification, and GES under future IPCC scenarios of the N Atlantic.

MSP goals and operational objectives

Report on sectoral activities, institutional landscape, existing management plans to develop MSP goals and the operational objectives for each case study area.

ATLAS dissemination and exploitation plan (DEP)

Report including the communication strategy, tools, messages and important events of the project, data management plan, a stakeholder database and internal knowledge output template

Report on the potential to reduce environmental assessment data acquisition costs to industry through development of data sharing within the ATLAS data management framework. Literature review of CWC ecophysiology

Compilation of existing ecophysiological data on CWC response to different conditions of food supply and oceanographic conditions.

Inventory of ecosystem services

Comprehensive inventory of existing services and their values, and the potential for future ecosystem services from case studies compiled from wider stakeholder communities and ATLAS findings.

Water masses controls on biodiversity and biogeography

Synthesis overview report on the influence of water mass properties on the biodiversity and biogeography of deep N Atlantic ecosystems. In-depth analyses of the influence of water mass identity/properties and organic matter supply on biodiversity and biogeography from (1) the Alboran Sea to the Azores, (2) the UK continental shelf and slope, (3) the NAFO regulatory area, and (4) across Davis Strait, Rockall Bank and the Azores.

Hydrodynamics and organic matter supply

Report of the in situ hydrodynamics, abiotic variables, and suspended particles near the seafloor and sedimenting particles from bottom traps to identify organic matter transport pathways for different case study sites and a qualitative comparison with output from the high‐resolution hydrodynamic models during periods of strong and weak AMOC.

Lagrangian connectivity of North Atlantic ecosystems

Use the ocean model VIKING20 to provide a realistic Lagrangian representation of the transport and mixing of ocean currents at all management scales and to general initial and lateral boundary conditions for model development and scenarios in other workpackages.

Integrated management considering connectivity patterns.

Synthesis of connectivity patterns and guidelines to integrate connectivity to management plans.

Policy implications arising from ATLAS

Report prepared on policy implications on the governance regime for the N Atlantic and articulation with global and regional instruments resulting from changing deep-sea dynamics.

Recent decadal-centennial changes in AMOC components and sub-polar gyre circulation quantified from the EEL, OSNAP, AR7, and RAPID ocean observation systems as well as high-resolution proxies of circulation and productivity from the NW Atlantic and subpolar NE Atlantic.

Willingness-to-pay for conservation in the N Atlantic

Report on willingness to pay for conservation in four Atlantic countries.

Policy brief on Blue Growth opportunities and challenges

Ocean monetary values to support adaptive MSP

Report on ocean monetary values, adaptive management and trade-offs.

Integrated physiological experiments and models

Experimental data on the physiological response of different types of benthic communities under predicted environmental changes including ocean acidification, temperature and food supply. These data will be used to train the physiological models of corals and sponges.

Deep-sea ecosystem tipping points

Critical environmental parameters affecting deep-sea ecosystems identified, using CWC reef extinctions/recolonisations from the geological record as the examplar and geochemical and kinetic proxies (radiocarbon, U/Th, grain size, foram assemblages) to assess environmental drivers and timings of tipping points.

Ecosystem goods and services valuation and environmental risk assessment

An atlas prepared that spatially delineates ecosystem goods and services alongside predicted SDMs and HDMs for each case study area. Risk assessment atlas: Overlap existing and future human use sector footprints (ODEMM and HERMIONE project data) with VME and fish habitat maps and use Marxan and other methods (e.g. as in CoralFISH) to measure the risk of activities impacting on VME or fish habitat extent. Risk assessments will be mapped in an atlas. Report on ocean monetary values of services based on markets and value transfer methods where primary studies exist (e.g. through the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database) for Atlantic case study areas.

ATLAS Trans-Atlantic Conference Report

Report prepared on ATLAS Trans-Atlantic Conference on N Atlantic VMEs and EBSAs to consider their status, contribution to BG, MSY and CBD Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The conference facilitates engagement with Canadian and US partners, and other international stakeholders.

Conservation management issues in ATLAS

Report summarising: (1) Identification of areas of management importance including potential EBSAs (EEF designations) and important fish habitat; (2) The EEF designation of portfolio conservation categories and contribution of existing conservation initiatives to ensure GES; (3) Delineation of predicted VMEs and importance of fish habitat in each ATLAS case study.

Ecosystem-relevant ocean flux

Large-scale budgets and trends of physical quantities relevant for marine biota and ecosystems quanitified at daily to annual timescales and understood in relation to AMOC and gyre dynamics.

Delivery of research outputs

Report that assesses tools and methods for improved delivery of research outputs to EMODnet and other major dissemination and engagement platforms for re-use and re-assembly of data and information products.

Reproduction, Dispersal and genetic connectivity in benthos and fish

Report on how life history traits of selected benthos and fish may mediate dispersal potential and genetic connectivity. Report on genetic data analysis, with maps produced in GIS illustrating network of connectivity for all species retained. Report outlining the genetic connectivity of deep-sea fish stocks and those that may be considered under Blue Growth scenarios (e.g. mesopelagic fish), and a summary of evidence for historical genetic bottlenecks related to fisheries over-exploitation.

Website, social media channels and dissemination portfolio set up and operational.

ATLAS outreach educational portfolio

A portfolio prepared, presenting the educational materials developed in ATLAS and disseminated to other outreach organisations for maximum update and impact.

ATLAS Data Management Plan

Report on DMP including ATLAS research outputs using OpenAIRE by an ATLAS information specialist who will ensure that all research outputs from ATLAS are cross‐linked and monitored by OpenAIRE. This will be achieved by actively monitoring data and literature publications from ATLAS partners using DataCite and Thompson Reuters, and by maintaining close communication with data repositories ENA, PANGAEA, ZENODO and OpenAIRE
