Airborne Wind Energy System Modelling, Control and Optimisation

Deliverables

Electrical Drives course

The electrical drive system including the electrical machine and back-to-back converter is one of the most important parts of an AWE system. However, many AWE researches have their background in mechanical engineering, aerodynamics and mathematics. This course shall provide a profound introduction to electrical drive systems in particular for participants without background in electrical engineering. The concepts of modelling and control of electrical drives and power converters are derived by starting with the basics of DC machines and boost converters followed by the theory of AC (rotating field) machines and two-level inverters. The learned concepts will be deepened by simulations and experiments in the student laboratory.

AWESCO winter school

The aim of this two-week winter school is to give both theoretical background and hands-on practical knowledge with computational tools for optimal control with differential algebraic equation models.

Software tool for estimation and control of periodic orbits

At the end of his research, the ESR should have created a tool to estimate and track the state of periodic orbits. Responsible for this deliverable is EPFL. With respect to the network content, this Swiss organisation is regarded a consortium member. With respect to the network financial budget it is regarded a partner organisation, funded by Swiss federal government for participating in this ITN.

Leadership Training

This five days leadership program will be organised at Chalmers for the AWESCO PhDs. The program is currently provided by Sharing Insight to all high-level researchers and administrators at Chalmers, providing cutting-edge training on team leading and team building, conflict alleviation, interpersonal skills, communication, and stress management.

Transferable Skills: key assets for your career

This course offers following modules: • Learning to communicate orally; Learning to communicate in writing; • Learning how to research; Learning how to teach; • Learning how to prepare for your career and find a job

Symposium

The symposium will be integrated together with the last internal research review to form a concluding presentation of the research output of the network, inviting also affiliated international speakers.

Scientific writing for scientists and engineers

This course is intended for scientists and engineers with an interest in improving their skills in writing scientific documents including journal papers, conference proceedings papers, abstracts, reports, theses, and proposals. The course will be of particular interest to researchers and graduate students as well as to university faculty who want to improve both their own writing and that of their students. It will address elements of good writing in science and engineering, including standard practices, terminology, and formatting. It will teach attendees how to present information using properly structured sentences, paragraphs, sections, and chapters and how to organize experimental results and analysis in a format suitable for publication in the scientific literature as well as in reports, theses, etc.

Oral Presentation skills course

The aim of the course Oral Presentations is to increase the ESRs oral presentation skills to a level that is expected in the world of engineering. The emphasis lies on acquiring general skills insights that ESRs need in different professional situations, with a wide range of presentation situations.

Project Management & Strategic Skills

In this training course the ESRs are taught how to manage their PhD project. This will also provide them with effective strategies to manage time and self management.

Open Source Software in public domain

As part of his research on control of dynamically uncertain airfoils, the ESR will publish open source software to promote knowledge diffusion. Responsible for this deliverable is ETHZ. With respect to the network content, this Swiss organisation is regarded a consortium member. With respect to the network financial budget it is regarded a partner organisation, funded by Swiss federal government for participating in this ITN.

International Conference 1

AWEC is a yearly conference that will bring together energy entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, utility companies, project developers, academic researchers, and government institutions to discuss emerging technologies and challenges to commercialization. This conference will give ESR the chance to present and discuss wide spectrum of issues including developments in airborne wind energy technology, public/private investments in renewable energy, advancements in resource analysis and regulatory issues. This conference will help the ESRs to understand the socio-economic issues related to this emerging technology. The proceedings from this conference will be available in public domain.

Entrepreneurship workshop

This two days workshop focusses on the entrepreneurial skills of the ESRs to prepare them for future commercialisation activities in the area of AWE. This workshop will be organised by the local ESR of Ampyx in close collaboration with the neighbouring YES!Delft incubator of the TUD.

International Conference 2

AWEC is a yearly conference that will bring together energy entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, utility companies, project developers, academic researchers, and government institutions to discuss emerging technologies and challenges to commercialization. This conference will give ESR the chance to present and discuss wide spectrum of issues including developments in airborne wind energy technology, public/private investments in renewable energy, advancements in resource analysis and regulatory issues. This conference will help the ESRs to understand the socio-economic issues related to this emerging technology. The proceedings from this conference will be available in public domain.

Initial network web-page

The initial webpage for AWESCO is ready.

Two papers or patent applications for each ESR

In order to diffuse the latest research results, each ESR is to submit two scientific paper or patent applications by the end of month 36.

Small scale prototype built and tested (UL)

In combination with his/her research on ground station design and optimization of AWE systems, the ESR joins the ALU-FR team in linking the tethered wing prototype to a multiple AWE generator rig.

Small scale prototype built and tested (ALU-FR)

At the end of his research, the ESR should have a tested prototype of a bridled rigid airfoil which is optimised in shape and topology.
