Objective
The proposed two year mobility involves undertaking research and training in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM), from the fellow’s current location at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Under the mentorship of Professor Seán Ó Riain, an expert in global political economy, the social aspects of the current financial crisis, and global ethnography, she will undertake a comparative study on anti-austerity mobilizations in Ireland and Spain to explain their widely divergent trajectories, thereby contributing important empirical knowledge while advancing major theoretical issues in contemporary research on contentious politics. The study will draw on the fellow’s expertise in European social movements to develop ongoing theoretical work on processes of transnational diffusion, movement latency, collective identity formation and use of ICTs in explaining the emergence and dynamics of social movement mobilization.
The host department provides expertise in Irish politics, history, and comparative political research. The Department of Sociology at NUIM is Ireland’s leading centre for the study of social movements. The applicant will benefit from training and skills development in the areas of cross-national comparative methodology, and social movement practitioner focused pedagogy, both specializations of the host department.
Public outreach activities include a series of public engagements with policy makers, civil society groups, students and the general public in the area of European contentious politics; a project website; and media engagement. The project will further the applicant’s career by enabling her to consolidate her leadership in the area of European social movements, and acquire methodological training, mentoring and experience in comparative political research. The research will contribute to a key area of concern for EU policy makers, scholars and practitioners and have measurable benefits for the ERA.
