Transparent Electrodes for Large Area, Large Scale Production of Organic Optoelectronic Devices

Descrizione del progetto

Manufacturing solutions for new ICT products
TREASORES: producing cheaper large area organic optoelectronic devices using roll-to-roll processes; developing new transparent, conductive, flexible electrodes and better barrier films.

TREASORES (Transparent Electrodes for Large Area, Large Scale Production of Organic Optoelectronic Devices) is a project that seeks to develop technologies to facilitate roll-to-roll production of organic optoelectronic devices. Roll-to-roll production (of electrodes, barrier layers and complete devices) will allow faster and larger production runs to give cheaper devices (<190 €/m2). The use of low-temperature processes (< 180 °C) ensures compatibility with most organic optoelectronic materials and reduces process costs. TREASORES will test the new technologies and processes on a large (i.e. production) scale for light-emitting devices (OLED and OLEC) and organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices.
The challenges for the project consist of making every element of the devices flexible, whilst retaining characteristics such as transparency (>90%, for efficiency), good electrical conductivity (<10 ω/square) in some directions but good resistance in other directions (for efficiency and reliability), and very low permeability (for long life). To maximise the chance of success within the project, TREASORES will begin by examining in parallel 4 different kinds of transparent electrode, three kinds of substrate/barrier layers and two different encapsulation approaches. After assessment, the most promising technologies will be scaled up to R2R encapsulation at substrate webspeeds of > 1 m/min and complete R2R device fabrication.

TREASORES will demonstrate the production of large area organic electronics using high throughput manufacturing technologies based on roll-to-roll (R2R) wet deposition processes. In particular, by developing large area (>1m2) transparent conducting barrier foils which will be used for the production of flexible organic light-emitting devices (OLED), light-emitting electrochemical devices (LEC) and flexible organic photovoltaics (OPV). This industry-driven project is a sustainable approach towards low cost production of organic thin film optoelectronic devices using low-temperature (<180°C) fabrication methods.TREASORES has a comprehensive, systematic approach including the fabrication of three 3 substrate and barrier layers, 4 novel transparent electrode layers, high-performance devices (Eff. >25 lm/W for OLED and LEC; Eff.>5%) made from organic semiconductors as well as reliable encapsulation (LEC lifetime>5000h, OLED lifetime >10000h). Testing, reliability validation and disposal issues are an integral part of the project. A key objective is to demonstrate the scale-up of novel flexible, transparent (Tr>90%) and conductive (R< 10/square) substrates to replace the widespread use of indium tin oxide (ITO). To keep production costs low (190 < €/m2), roll-to-roll processes will be applied all the way from the manufacturing of components to devices. Emphasis will be given to organic semiconductors that have proven to be efficient and stable on the laboratory scale. Scale-up of device area (>100cm2) to high throughput production (web speed >1m/min.) without degradation of performance or yield is a key objective of the project. Flexible encapsulation foils shall use the most advanced barrier materials and will be made available in large enough surface area to be compatible with prototype device fabrication on a pilot scale.Exploitation is ensured by the participation of manufacturers concerned with OLED, LEC and OPV devices, by the clear pathway from laboratory development to pilot production (using the same processes) and by the extensive experience of the academic partners in collaborating with industry.
