Result description

A light dredge for mussel farming was tested using two different experimental setups. A standard Dutch dredge was tested against a light dredge using both a twin haul experiment and a single drege experiment. The weight of the sediment retained was 49% less using the light dredge, compared with the Dutch dredge. There was no significant difference of the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of the two gears. However, in the single dredge experiment, the light dredge had a significant increase in the CPUE of 200%. The replacement of a light dredge reduced suspension of sediments and reduced fuel consumption.

Result description

This tool can model changed fishing patterns, if/when subject to marine restrictions such as marine protected areas, windmill farms, oil pipes, marine traffic etc. The model simulates not just the spatial effort changes, but also the economic performance of the fishermen as well as the spatial changes in fish biomass abundance.
